Abortion Fits GOP Philosophy, Says Giuliani

By Jeff McKay

New York, N.Y. (CNSNews.com) - While the national Republican platform is decidedly pro-life and has been for the past two decades, the GOP mayor of the nation's largest city believes his party's philosophical underpinnings are more in tune with the pro-abortion point of view.

New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said favoring the availability of abortion is "more consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party."

Giuliani made his eyebrow-raising remarks at an awards luncheon April 6 sponsored by the National Abortion Rights Action League in New York City, a leading abortion group.

Kelli Conlin, the executive director of the New York chapter of NARAL, applauded Giuliani's views. She called the mayor "a great advocate for us," and said it was "unfortunate the leadership of the GOP has moved into a direction where they want to implant government control on the lives of women and on reproductive freedom."

Although some of the state's top Republicans favor the availability of abortion - both Giuliani and Gov. George Pataki are supporters of abortion rights - their views on the issue are not shared by all in the New York GOP.

"Rudy Giuliani is not the poster child for the Republican Party. His values are completely out-of-step with the views of the GOP," said Lori Hougen, spokesperson for the New York chapter of the National Right to Life.

Allright! Now we can sit back and watch as we start to eat our own, then maybe can we debate the Dems about the issues? That is if the factions in our party havent destroyed all of the GOP candidatres first.

Alright! Now we can sit back and watch as we start to eat our own, then maybe can we debate the Dems about the issues? That is if the factions in our party haven't destroyed all of the GOP candidates first.

Don't you get it? THERE IS NO GOP, at least not in any meaningful sense. It is a label that has lost all meaning. It says nothing about the product upon which it is pasted. It says nothing about a candidate's views on abortion, gun control, taxes, national security, business, or anything else of importance. NOTHING. It is a meaningless label.

If the labels in the grocery store were so void of meaning, how would you choose what to buy? Most likely by looking at what is in the box. When I look inside the box of Rudy, metaphorically speaking, I see a product that I will not be buying. I don't care what his label says.

You have the facts wrong. According to exit polls, Democrat turnout was up, Republican turnout was down. Independent turnout was unchanged. Voters who identified themselves as conservatives was down. Voters who identified themselves as moderates was up. Voters who identified themselves as liberal was up.

            Exit Poll Figures

	2004 2006 Difference
Dem 37%	38% 1%
GOP 37%	36%	-1%
Ind 26%	26% 0%

Liberal 21%	20%	-1%
Moderate 45%	47% 2%
Conser 34%	32%	-2%

Okay, you posted my statement and the facts to back it up. The same facts I used, btw.

Now how about answering the data contained in youtr post at #167. I'm curious to see where it all came from.

Ya, the numbers really "explain" the 4.5% swing away from the GOP (9% total). Note too that liberal turnout was down, not up.

I might be more inclined to accept your request and spend the time documenting my comments, if you had better manners. But you don't, so I won't. Feel free to ignore it. Thanks.

Another whiner. If you don't have the data to support your post, don't make excuses. You don't like my style and I don't like yours. We're even. LOL

I just found this article. I thought this thread was a good place to post it. Suggest all conservatives archive it and use it when the liberal Rudy-rooters spew their nonsense about Rudy not being pro-abortion. Heck, even loony lefty Tom Daschle was opposed to partial birth abortion, but Giuliani supports it.

Giuliani is Pro-Abortion

Republican National Coalition for Life

New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is popular in the big apple because he is credited with reducing crime and cleaning up Times Square, among other accomplishments. Now at the end of his career as Mayor (he is prevented by law from seeking another term), Giuliani is traveling about the country giving speeches and acting like a potential candidate for something. Pundits are speculating that he might be interested in a vice presidential spot on a ticket possibly headed by Texas Governor George W. Bush.

Although he doesn’t talk about it in conservative circles, Mayor Giuliani is pro-abortion. Columnist Thomas Edsall wrote this in the Washington Post on December 30, 1997: “Giuliani defended President Clinton when he was criticized by the Vatican earlier this year for his veto of the ban on the late-term abortion procedure. Giuliani is on record saying New York state law should not be changed to outlaw the procedure.”

More recently, Liz Trotta had this to say in the Washington Times (8/25/98): “Thirty years ago, Rep. Peter King, a GOP congressman from Long Island worked alongside Mr. Giuliani when they were interns in Richard M. Nixon’s law firm. In those days, Mr. King recalled, the mayor was a “radical left” supporter of activists like Stokely Carmichael and H. Rap Brown. “He didn’t think much of Republicans then,” said Mr. King, “except maybe Rocky” — former Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York. Citing the mayor’s stands on abortion and homosexual rights, Mr. King described Mr. Giuliani as “too liberal” and “too temperamental” to be a GOP presidential choice.

The vice president is a heartbeat away from the presidency. Candidates for both offices must be judged by the same criteria — they must have respect for the sanctity of human life and be committed to protecting the God-given right to life. Mayor Giuliani, Governor Christine Todd Whitman of New Jersey, former Governor Pete Wilson of California, all of whom hold the same pro-abortion views as Bill Clinton, do not deserve the presidential or vice presidential nominations of the Republican Party because they oppose the first principles upon which our great nation was founded.

Here's another interesting article I just found:

Baltimore's Cardinal Keeler Refuses to Attend Loyola Commencement Honoring Giuliani

Cardinal William Keeler of Baltimore informed Loyola College of Maryland interim president David Haddad that the Cardinal refuses to participate in an event honoring Rudolph Giuliani, an advocate of abortion rights and probable Republican candidate for U.S. president in 2008. The former New York City mayor has been invited to deliver Loyola's commencement address and receive an honorary degree on Friday, May 20.

"There will be no representative of the Archdiocese of Baltimore participating in any event honoring former Mayor Giuliani," Keeler wrote in a letter dated May 18, noting that he and Haddad had an "earlier exchange of correspondence" about the college's invitation to Giuliani. In what may be a subtle threat to Loyola College's official recognition by the Cardinal as a Catholic institution, Keeler wrote, "I am confident that, by now, you understand many of the consequences that spring from an invitation having been extended to former Mayor Giuliani to receive an honorary degree at Loyola. May the Lord make this a teaching moment for many." (The Cardinal Newman Society News Alert, 5/18/05)

Bishop McHugh Rescinds Speaking Opportunities for Pro-Abortion Candidates

Saying it would be “foolish and counterproductive to provide a platform to those who favor or support a public policy of abortion-on-demand or of euthanasia or assisted suicide,” Long Island, NY Archbishop James McHugh issued a directive on September 21st establishing a new policy for his archdiocese that “no pro-abortion public official or candidate is to be invited to address Catholic agencies or organizations, school or parish groups, even if the candidate does not intend to express his or her pro-abortion views.” Appearances at 19 scheduled forums by pro-abortion candidates including Mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani and U.S. Senate candidates Rick Lazio and Hillary Clinton, were cancelled. “It would be extremely misleading to provide such persons a platform to promote their views, even on other issues, lest they claim that the Church somehow implicitly tolerates their rejection of Church teaching on pro-life issues.”

The directive was not limited to politicians. It noted that “those who are pro-abortion or claim to be personally opposed to abortion but unwilling to integrate their moral principles with civic responsibilities are not to be given leadership positions in the diocese, parish, or other church agencies or organizations, nor to exercise any liturgical ministry.” He states further, “Parishes and other diocesan agencies or organizations should not bestow public honors or privileges of any type on such persons.” The directive also bans abortion supporters from speaking at graduation ceremonies, celebrated lectures, and from sitting as honorary chairmen of events such as fundraisers. (New York Post, 10/10/00)

Hmmmm. Most men I've encountered who are pro-abortion are that way because they have had to depend on it to get them out of a jam.

FGS, that article is seven years old.

Thank you. Now, if you use Giuliani's record as mayor to support him, I'll just point out that you're referring to irrelevant stuff that is seven years old.

But, no matter much you want to deny it, the article is relevant. Giuliani is a pro-abortion northeast liberal.

Another good article exposing Rudy for the liberal pro-abortionist he is. Some FReeper folks are getting real upset when evidence is presented not favorable to Giuliani. They want all the bad things attributed to Rudy during his entire life to just go away. They want everyone to focus on the here and now, and not mention anything having to do with his lifetime of promoting liberal causes. If there are so many social conservatives on FR speaking out in opposition to Giuliani, don't these Rudy-Rooters realize there are even more social conservatives bound to oppose Giuliani throughout America. Its kind of obvious.

Thanks for the post and the ping.

Thanks for the link to this post. After reading through all the comments, I just cannot believe that conservatives would even consider Rudy as a viable candidate. There is no difference between him and any democrat, but if we don't promise to vote for him, we are the problem. I guess that I'm going to be a problem.

Abortion has nothing to do with belief in liberty and freedom, and everything to do with the fact that the Constitution outlaws murder...which abortion is, the murder of an unborn baby.
