Abortion Fits GOP Philosophy, Says Giuliani

By Jeff McKay
CNS Correspondent
April 09, 2001

New York, N.Y. (CNSNews.com) - While the national Republican platform is decidedly pro-life and has been for the past two decades, the GOP mayor of the nation's largest city believes his party's philosophical underpinnings are more in tune with the pro-abortion point of view.

New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said favoring the availability of abortion is "more consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party."

Giuliani made his eyebrow-raising remarks at an awards luncheon April 6 sponsored by the National Abortion Rights Action League in New York City, a leading abortion group.

Kelli Conlin, the executive director of the New York chapter of NARAL, applauded Giuliani's views. She called the mayor "a great advocate for us," and said it was "unfortunate the leadership of the GOP has moved into a direction where they want to implant government control on the lives of women and on reproductive freedom."

Although some of the state's top Republicans favor the availability of abortion - both Giuliani and Gov. George Pataki are supporters of abortion rights - their views on the issue are not shared by all in the New York GOP.

"Rudy Giuliani is not the poster child for the Republican Party. His values are completely out-of-step with the views of the GOP," said Lori Hougen, spokesperson for the New York chapter of the National Right to Life.

2008 is a whole new ballgame. Past statements are irrelevant.

---"Calling for an "anti-Rudy team." How juvenile.
And getting juvenile results. So far Rudy leads most polls(s)."---

Well, then that's all that matters!

The polls also say people want free health care and college tuition - so why fight it?

At this time in the 2000 election cycle, Libby Dole led the polls, followed by McVain. We all see what happened when your kind was telling us Bush couldn't win.

The only thing you've exposed we discussed in a prior thread.

I will also vote for whoever opposes the Dems in the election, but I will support only pro-life candidates for the nomination. I'm a man of principles, not insanity.

That said, his past statements and other actions (cue the obligatory Rudy drag queen pic) are just that and has little or no significance in 2008.

So, I guess that anything that Hillary, Obama, Richardson, or whatever other dumbass Democrat has said or done in the past will be off limits this election too? You're kidding, right?

Try again, disruptor. I dare you to find one post of mine wherein I have stated I am supporting any one candidate at this juncture..

I want a full field of GOP candidates so that all GOOD ideas are brought forth and debated and the bad ideas are challenged and refuted.

I find it disgusting that for people like you, it is not enough to back and support your own candidate, but instead find it fun to trash other candidates.

You're calling for flame wars.

Thanks for the post, Spiff. Conservatives need to see what this one-trick pony is up to.

Liz .. we all know what Giuliani is and what he supports

Though ... he is strong on the war and bottom line is .. if we lose this war then none of our beliefs and values will matter .. the abortion issue will be the less of our worries

I readily admit, Rudy is not my top pick in the primaries .. but come the general election .. I will vote for whoever is the candidate

Our country may not survive a Dem in the WH .. especial now

I was a strong supporter of GW. Your assumptions are wrong. It's a good reason that most adults don't make assumptions.

This race is different that 2000. It's in full swing now. And the polls don't mean a lot - but the point is for the adolescents who now have an anti-Rudy ping list - they aren't aren't having much success. My advice is to work for someone - rather than against someone.

Thanks for the ping and the post.

We all know more abortions take place in NY City then any other city in America. What some folks may not realize, Rudy Giuliani supports abortion on demand, while opposing a ban on partial birth abortion. Nothing is more liberal then Rudy`s abortion position. Some FReepers appear to have a serious problem when this is posted. As far as I know, Free Republic remains opposed to the current culture of death in America today. We are a conservative pro-life website.

To those Freepers who want to stifle free speech and political dissent I say, find a different forum to spew your culture of death postings on.

This is an asinine post. Rudy is not an abortion advocate.

But he is realistic enough to know that abortion can ultimately only be stopped by changing the mores of an increasingly secular society.

And by teaching and practicing God's word. In that realm, Spiff, you are bearing false witness.

Laws may be passed or done away with. A pill will always be available.

You might also note Rudy is a Catholic. In excellent standing.

Rudy saved hundreds of thousands of NYC lives in his tenure as mayor simply by dramatically reducing crime. Many, many of those helped and protected were expectant mothers and children.

If you are seeking an Utopian candidate who will state, "I will outlaw abortion.!" you'd better not hold your breath doing it.

The overwhelming view of Americans is that they (increasingly) disapprove of abortion, but do NOT want to outlaw it.

Thank you.

By the way, here's Rudy's opening line to that speech he gave to NARAL:

Thank you very much for inviting me to say a few words of welcome. This event shows that people of different political parties and different political thinking can unite in support of choice. In doing so, we are upholding a distinguished tradition that began in our city starting with the work of Margaret Sanger and the movement for reproductive freedom that began in the early decades of the 20th century.

Yes, he even celebrated the work of pro-Nazi eugenicist Margaret 'more children from the fit, less from the unfit' Sanger.

The more I dig tonight, the more I feel that I need a shower. I thought Giuliani was pretty bad before, but now I see how disgusting he really is.

This is an asinine post. Rudy is not an abortion advocate.

The subject of this thread was a speech that Giuliani gave to the National Abortion Rights Action League - one of the nation's leading abortion advocacy groups. Rudy was asked to speak to NARAL because they recognized him as a "Champion of Choice" at the event.

So instead of giving Rudy time to explain himself to the public over these social issues, it's better to tear him down before he has even officially declared.

I'm wary of Rudy's social liberalism; however, for someone to still run for President as a Republican knowing that this will come into play says to me that he's changed his views and has surveyed the political landscape.

Look, no Republican is going to run openly in 2008 as a pro-gun control, pro-abortion, and pro-homosexual. Now if this article was dated today instead of 2001, then Rudy shouldn't be supported by conservatives.

It would be great to get the actual quote in context rather than an excerpt from a biased source.
