Abortion Fits GOP Philosophy, Says Giuliani

New York, N.Y. (CNSNews.com) - While the national Republican platform is decidedly pro-life and has been for the past two decades, the GOP mayor of the nation's largest city believes his party's philosophical underpinnings are more in tune with the pro-abortion point of view.

New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said favoring the availability of abortion is "more consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party."

Giuliani made his eyebrow-raising remarks at an awards luncheon April 6 sponsored by the National Abortion Rights Action League in New York City, a leading abortion group.

Kelli Conlin, the executive director of the New York chapter of NARAL, applauded Giuliani's views. She called the mayor "a great advocate for us," and said it was "unfortunate the leadership of the GOP has moved into a direction where they want to implant government control on the lives of women and on reproductive freedom."

Although some of the state's top Republicans favor the availability of abortion - both Giuliani and Gov. George Pataki are supporters of abortion rights - their views on the issue are not shared by all in the New York GOP.

"Rudy Giuliani is not the poster child for the Republican Party. His values are completely out-of-step with the views of the GOP," said Lori Hougen, spokesperson for the New York chapter of the National Right to Life.

I think all these candidates who are in favor of abortion should be required to view one before they open their mouths.

Right. And they should dictate their values to everyone regardless of their beliefs. That's what we need more of.

Freedom and independence are incompatible with social-'conservatism'.

I don't think so but murder is incompatible with social conservatism. As it happens murder is also incompatible with "freedom and independence". Rudy supports later term abortion which is murder pure and simple. Looks like both you and Rudy are incompatible with "freedom and independence" from where I'm sitting.

By his own measure, Rudy's sole claim to fame is being a 9/11 survivor. The only plank in his platform is "I did it before and I can do it again."

But, Liz, we've been told by liberal Rudy lovers in this thread that any statements as old as 2001 (like the one that is the subject of this thread) are irrelevant. Therefore, his statements in the few months he remained in office after 9/11 and his actions as Mayor after the attacks are irrelevant and off limits.

Ghouliani has confused the philosophy of the Republican party with that of the Dims.

If he can't run on the democrat ticket, he shouldn't run at all.

Thank god Reagan was elected before Freerepublic.. A lot of people here would not call Reagan a pure conservative.

And a lot of people - like the liberal Rudy-rooters - would be saying he was far too conservative to be elected.

The trade-off is that Rudy is 1) basically a good man and 2) has the potential to bring those crucial states into the column of Presidential electors.

I agree that Rudy is a good man. He did a fantastic job after 9/11. He also did a great job cleaning up crime in NY.

There's no way a Republican - even Rudy - will move NY or NJ from blue to red! Those two states are in the "lost to blue forever" column along with MA.

A comment like that from Rudy so few years ago makes it clear he doesn't comprehend what the Republican Party Platforms are all about. Such a man cannot be brought away from the dark side.

"My guess is because Giuliani is doing well amongst Republicans, and this is an attempt to decrease his momentum leading up to the primaries."

I would hope so! Do you prefer an uninformed voter?

April 09, 2001 -- ROFLOL! You are all getting desperate in pulling out an article from April 9, 2001. Let me think -- when did 9-11 happen? That's right September 11th, 2001. Do you anti-Rudy haters know how people changed after 9-11 or do you pretend it didn't happen because it doesn't fit your agenda. Rudy is not the same man now that he was before 9-11 except he is still the law and order prosecutor he was known for when he took on the mob and now wants to take on the terrorist and will uphold all the laws of the land not just ones a certain group likes or hates.

Your strawman of an article before 9-11 has me totally convinced that Rudy has an excellent shot to be our nominee the way some of you are acting. How many abortions did Rudy perform? How many laws did Rudy get pass as Mayor of NY about abortions? Are you people so naive that you expect a Mayor not to honor the law of the land which permits abortions or do you think an elected official has the option of picking and choosing which laws to enforce.

Roe v. Wade made abortion legal in this Country. I think it is a States Right's Issue but the SCOTUS certainly didn't ask me and if I had a vote, I would vote to outlaw in my State. But I also would criticize any elected official today who decided that the law was no good and took it upon themselves to do something about it. I elect my representatives to uphold the law of this Nation not to pick and choose. 9th Circuit does enough legislating from the bench that I don't want elected officials determining which laws to enforce.

Thanks again for reinforcing my belief that Rudy is leading the way you are throwing your fits about him. Some of us who have been Republicans and Conservatives are whole adult lives fighting in the trenches to electing Republicans are sick and tired of my way or no way I am not voting crowd that keeps threatening not to vote and already cost us dearly in 2006. We are paying for it right now and so are the members of our military because some of you threw your temper tantrums and stayed home to teach a lesson and are now threatening to do the same in 2008. If you cannot comprehend what is happening right now in D.C. thanks to stay at home voters, then some of you don't have a clue. Some of you can throw out the Congress disappointed you. Well they did me too but that didn't stop me from voting to return my Republican Congressman to office who did NOT disappoint me. What disappointed me was the people on here that said the two parties were the same and as we are learning day by day it is not true. Same thing the Perot people said and look what happened then -- Clinton. You would think some people would get a clue but that looks like it is too much to ask.

Your voices are now being diminished as it is necessary to reach out to other coalitions to win the White House. Good job of turning off voters and helping elect Dems to be in control. Grandstanding on social issues and shoving it in people's faces is now backlashing. Some of us want to make sure that our candidate in 2008 can win because we believe the election is too important to stamp our feet and throw a fit and not vote. If some of you don't like the nominee and cannot hold your nose to vote for them in the general, then you have no business being in the Republican Party because those of us who have been in the trenches for years fighting for the majority need people we can count on not people that throw fits and stay home.
