New York, N.Y. (CNSNews.com) - While the national Republican platform is decidedly pro-life and has been for the past two decades, the GOP mayor of the nation's largest city believes his party's philosophical underpinnings are more in tune with the pro-abortion point of view.
New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said favoring the availability of abortion is "more consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party."
Giuliani made his eyebrow-raising remarks at an awards luncheon April 6 sponsored by the National Abortion Rights Action League in New York City, a leading abortion group.

Kelli Conlin, the executive director of the New York chapter of NARAL, applauded Giuliani's views. She called the mayor "a great advocate for us," and said it was "unfortunate the leadership of the GOP has moved into a direction where they want to implant government control on the lives of women and on reproductive freedom."
Although some of the state's top Republicans favor the availability of abortion - both Giuliani and Gov. George Pataki are supporters of abortion rights - their views on the issue are not shared by all in the New York GOP.
"Rudy Giuliani is not the poster child for the Republican Party. His values are completely out-of-step with the views of the GOP," said Lori Hougen, spokesperson for the New York chapter of the National Right to Life.

And Rudy is liberal-left, how?
The guy totally cleaned up NYC. We're talking about a city that was famous for its muggings, porn on Times Square, squee-gee men, etc. If this isn't conservative, then what?
Good! And that's the smart thing to do - vote against Rudy in the primaries. There's no need for all of this hyperventilating now.
Thanks for posting. Unless he has apologized and recanted, he will not be the elected Republican nominee of anything outside of New York.

Pretty sound statement. Almost every single Rudy supporter at FR is from NY or a current NYer. Not all, but the overwhelming majority.
I stand corrected on the Church/re-marriage, not recalling the divorces (or the details)..
Any politician in the New York City/New Jersey region has to be pro-choice if they are ever to be elected and, if of worth, accomplish anything.
The trade-off is that Rudy is 1) basically a good man and 2) has the potential to bring those crucial states into the column of Presidential electors.
Those with the most votes win, and get to write legislation, and all that other stuff. Those who lose, get to live by the legislation, without input.
Personally, I like to have input, and have it carry weight. I cannot for the life of me imagine writing to a democrat, and have them give a rat's rear end as to what I have to say.
I always have the "perfect candidate" in mind.
Come November, I vote for the one who most closely resembles that image, pimples and all.
Tearing down someone who may be a, or the, candidate 2 years out serves no purpose other than placing doubt in the minds of those who are swayed by such.
Is Rudy the Man? I do not believe it. I have very strong feelings about his stance on the 2nd.
However, If he is the one left standing, and is up against Hillary or those of her ilk, I will not only support him and vote for him, I will also send all I can afford to back his play.
At this time, there is definitely a dirth of strong candidates that fit into the mold I envision.
Btw, here is the Republican Party platform on the abortion issue.
Promoting a Culture of Life
As a country, we must keep our pledge to the first guarantee of the Declaration of
Independence. That is why we say the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to
life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution
and we endorse legislation to make it clear that the Fourteenth Amendments protections
apply to unborn children. Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions. We oppose using public revenues for abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life.
Our goal is to ensure that women with problem pregnancies have the kind of
support, material and otherwise, they need for themselves and for their babies, not to be
punitive towards those for whose difficult situation we have only compassion. We oppose
abortion, but our pro-life agenda does not include punitive action against women who
have an abortion. We salute those who provide alternatives to abortion and offer adoption
services, and we commend Congressional Republicans for expanding assistance to
adopting families and for removing racial barriers to adoption. We join the President in
supporting crisis pregnancy programs and parental notification laws. And we applaud
President Bush for allowing states to extend health care coverage to unborn children.
We praise the President for his bold leadership in defense of life. We praise him
for signing the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. This important legislation ensures that
every infant born alive including an infant who survives an abortion procedure is
considered a person under federal law. We praise Republicans in Congress for passing, with strong bipartisan support, a ban on the inhumane procedure known as partial birth abortion. And we applaud President Bush for signing legislation outlawing partial birth abortion and for vigorously defending it in the courts.
I'm not supporting Rudy, however, he believes that abortion should be left up to the states (as do I)... Even if Roe v Wade is overturned, abortion would not be outlawed, only certain states will have legalize abortion..
By his own measure, Rudy's sole claim to fame is being a 9/11 survivor. The only plank in his platform is "I did it before and I can do it again." Posturing Rudy as a "war president" is like waving a "Go Ahead Bomb Us" sign to 100 million terrorists.
I'm not telling you to vote for him
but that's a tad overboard
Unless they are, or will be running on the dem ticket. LOL.
That is where all this energy should be directed.
Thank god Reagan was elected before Freerepublic.. A lot of people here would not call Reagan a pure conservative.
LOL -
That is where all this energy should be directed.
Imagine what could be accomplished!
You make a good point! Thanks
Yeah, sure is----but that's because you don't think like a terrorist........thankfully.
