"If you can go toe-to-toe with liberals in Massachusetts and New York City and acquit yourself well, you are prepared for D.C.," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.

Mead credits Giuliani with mental toughness rare among elected officials. Instead of seeking consensus, Giuliani openly defied many of the city's leading liberals on crime and welfare reform.
"Giuliani confronted not only the bureaucracy, but the community groups and the academics and the journalists and all those who said you couldn't be tough on the poor," Mead said. "He said that you can be you can demand that they play by the rules. And he got away with it."
**
"It's very difficult for such a person to win Republican primaries," said Jack Pitney, a professor of politics at Claremont McKenna College.
Difficult, but not impossible, Norquist said. As an example, he pointed to Ronald Reagan.
"Reagan passed the most liberal abortion laws in the country and the most liberal divorce laws in the country as governor (of California), and then ran as the pro-life, social-conservative presidential candidate," Norquist said.

Giuliani's sharp-edge personality is another wild card. He sometimes rubs people, especially journalists, the wrong way.
On the other hand, his toughness might appeal to like-minded conservatives.
"A nice person couldn't have done what Giuliani did in New York," Mead said. "You needed a pit bull. Giuliani is a pit bull."

Do you have the ping list?
Problem is that Rudy is a Northeast Liberal, but he won't carry any of the liberal Northeast states. Not even New York.
No thanks.
Rino udy is unelectable. He will split the base of the party and drive many social conservatives and evangelicals to stay home or go third party.
I'll debate him. He might not be so tough as he thinks he is.
Good on National Security
Bad on Social Issues
Unsupportable on social issues. He is as liberal as Hitlery on them.
Problem is that Rudy is a Northeast Liberal, but he won't carry any of the liberal Northeast states. Not even New York.
Exactly, Hilliary's candidacy takes NY of the table for Rudy, that leaves NH in the NE, and Rudy may not be able to carry states like Arkansas.
Now if we had a Republican House and Senate, with large majorities then "maybe" on Rudy then again maybe not.
What we need for a candidate is one with Gingrich's intellect and politics - but not his morals!
And with Giuliani's toughness and decisiveness - but not his politics!
(nor his morals...)
the polls have him winning in NJ, PA, NY and CT. I think he'd win all 4 against anyone but Hillary, and even then it would be close, a lot closer than any other candidate. don't underestimate the italian factor in states like NJ, RI, CT, PA and NY.
By comparison, Mitt Romney is getting blown out 57-32 by Barack Obama in MA. His home state. For reference, no one has won the WH and lost their home state since Wilson in 1916, and he's the only one in the last 150 years. So in a state where he was the Governor for 4 years, he get's almost doubled up by a guy that could walk into Fanueil Hall unrecognized a few months ago and has been in the Senate all of two years. If Mitt is that far behind in MA, where he was fairly unpopular by the end of his term, it's not a good sign.
We can decide to fall on our sword and go with a Goldwater ideological purity and suffer the consequences. As it stands right now, Rudy and McCain are the only 2 GOP candidates I can see giving us a chance. Things can change, and I hope they do, and that's what the primaries are for.
But, if Rudy or McCain does win the primaries, I'd hate to see a repeat of '92 and have a bunch of holier than thou types prove thir point by giving us eight more years of Bill and Hillary Clinton in the White House, to be almost guaranteed by 8 years of Barack and Michele Obama.
I'd hope that once the general rolls around, we remember the 11th Commandment and ask ourselves WWRD? Would he stay home and put Bill and Hillary back in power?
The point is,
The positive media protection for rudy will dry up as soon he goes up against a democrat for president.
Rudy supporters are falling for the media playing possum on the RINOs. His "electability" is being played up by the media and lapped up by the rudy supporters. This goes against history in the fact that when republicans run conservatives who espouse a conservative ideology, they win. When they run RINOs, they lose.
They want to get everyone caught up in how well liked rudy is and how he could win. Then when the time comes, every flaw they glossed over will be exposed and examined.
You overlook the fact that without that group who has principles and convictions, the ones you so shallowly call the "my way or the highway crowd," Giuliani won't get into the general election, where the feel-good soccer moms might pull his fat from the fire.
Thank God.
The poll posted belies that.
You have used the same line for several threads now, try something new, yawn.
The truth does not change. Rino Rudy is unelectable.
Please stay home. We do not want your vote.
