"We're talking about clearing a path to the targets" by taking out much of the Iranian Air Force, Kilo submarines, anti-ship missiles that could target commerce or U.S. warships in the Gulf, and maybe even Iran's ballistic missile capability"

That's actually pretty obvious and not surprising at all.

I am certain the Defense Dept. has a strategy set up to invade Cuba once Castro's life ends. I know. It would be a dream come true.

Well, now that we have given them the game plan we need to send them everything they'll need to defend against it.

I hope so too.

The article sounds like someone trying to drum up hysteria. As in "Oh no, we're going to get involved in another big commitment!" Now, I can understand how that might frighten a cut-n-run 'rat... ;-)

However, that's not what was outlined.

  1. Iranian Air Force? Yes, has to be taken out. Period. Step one in US military doctrine is to establish air superiority over the battlefield.
  2. Kilo submarines? Yep, gotta go. That way the US Navy carriers can safely operate close-in and support objective #1.
  3. Missile sites? Gotta go.
    • SAMs and their radars and control centers are a threat to air superiority. (see #1)
    • Anti ship missiles are a threat to US Naval units. (see #2)
    • Ballistic missiles are a threat because they are the delivery vehicles for WMD. Even if/when we (or the Israelis) take out the Iranian nuclear program sites... Ballistic missiles remain a threat because the missiles themselves or the technology could be sold to some other unfriendly country. eg. North Korea. NK seems to be ahead of the Iranians on nuclear weapons technology, but lagging in missile development at the moment.
But really, the article smacks of sensationalism. Militarily, it seems to outline a nominal attack plan. Not a bare minimum strike, not a massive invasion, but a nominal, thorough plan. However, as others have pointed out, big deal. We have contingency plans for everything. I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in West Point there were plans to take over Annapolis. ;-)

Also, who is this guy that he would know anything official?

"I've seen some of the planning ... You're not talking about a surgical strike," said Wayne White, who was a top Middle East analyst for the State Department's bureau of intelligence and research until March 2005.

"You're talking about a war against Iran" that likely would destabilize the Middle East for years, White told the Middle East Policy Council, a Washington think tank."

"We're not talking about just surgical strikes against an array of targets inside Iran. We're talking about clearing a path to the targets" by taking out much of the Iranian Air Force, Kilo submarines, anti-ship missiles that could target commerce or U.S. warships in the Gulf, and maybe even Iran's ballistic missile capability, White said."

So what is the problem Mr White? Iran has been destabilizing guide acts of terrorism aka serial killings against innocents for 3 decades. Kill these bastards and their military, and the world will stabilize very quickly.

If Tehran Knew!:

"In America, they lie for tactical reasons, stating over and over that military action against Iran is unlikely. However in Iran, out of ignorance, they reiterate that American military action against their country is impossible because the US is "unable" to do so!

We say and hope our analysis is wrong. A possible military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities is in the final stages. Unless a political miracle occurs that revives the halted dialog between Iran and the international community, Iran and its neighboring countries should not be surprised by a scenario that includes American military action. "

Just maybe, President Bush is purposely allowing the media and the left to spout their garbage in order to create the illusion that we are completely incapable of taking any action against Iran. It would come as a complete surprise if we did take action.

Iranian Map: Before our upcoming Victory:

Iranian Map: After our upcoming Victory:

Over the past week, the U.S. Navy has given orders to the U.S.S. John Stennis carrier battle group, based in Bremerton, WA, to steam toward the Persian Gulf, where it will join the U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Navy sources say the Pentagon is getting ready to announce the dispatch of a third carrier battle group – the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan – from San Diego. That will make three carrier battle groups in the region starting at around the end of January.

Oh, and along with them is the amphibious assault group led by the U.S.S. Boxer, which can land several thousand U.S. Marines to seize and destroy strategic sites near the coast at a moment’s notice. (Busheir? Bandar Abbas? Jask? The three Persian Gulf islands Iran seized from the UAE in the 1990s and has since fortified to harass Gulf shipping? Your pick).

A Quote from: The Dogs of War - Lessons of the 20th Century. By Victor Davis Hanson, (author most recently of Carnage and Culture: Landmark Battles in the Rise of Western Power):

"I would not wish to fight the United States - either militarily, politically, or culturally. For every threat, our history teaches us that Americans offer not just a rejoinder, but the specter of a devastating answer of a magnitude almost inconceivable to those now chanting and threatening in the streets of the Middle East.

Do they have any idea of what sort of dangerous people we really are? Do they understand the history of the names of those ships now off their coasts, like the USS Peleliu or Enterprise, or the pedigree of the 82nd or 101st Airborne?"
