Republicans 2008: Giuliani 28%, McCain 20%
Angus Reid Global Monitor ^ | 1/20/2007 | Staff

Posted on 01/19/2007 2:35:59 PM PST by Dark Skies

Rudy Giuliani is still the preferred presidential hopeful for Republican Party sympathizers in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 28 per cent of respondents would support the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

Arizona senator John McCain is second with 20 per cent, followed by former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with 14 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with eight per cent.

Earlier this month, Gingrich questioned the GOP’s reliance on its conservative base, saying, "Ronald Reagan understood that arguments should be made where we have huge advantages with virtually all Americans. He was brilliant at avoiding base-narrowing appeals and emphasizing base-broadening appeals. A base-motivation party inherently, in the long run, drives away the non-base."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.

The debate happens here every day between the only-Rudy-and-none-else folks and the never-Rudy folks. Surely you can see Rudy is incapable of uniting the party behind him

I'm not seeing what you are ...check out the new Rasmussion poll....he's gaining ground ...so is Newt....at the expense of McCaine.

The base likes Rudy...they may disagree with him on issues but unlike McCaine they like him. If he's the nominee they won't stay home.

Rudy hasn't even started to campaign. As a student of Churchill, I think Rudy is vy Churchillian.

Hang tough...Rudy will prove his mettle.

Newt thourouhly beat Hillary and Bill in 1994. I would be happy to see a replay in '08, Newt wins hands down. Her baggage is heavier than his baggage by tons. And Rudy is far less acceptable to conservatives ideologically and behaviourally than Newt.

Also, ALL of Newt's baggage at this time is pretty well known, others' baggage will be peeled off like onion... in addition to what we already know. That's how campaigns unravel - drip-drip-drip, with a possible knockout punch delivered by Dems just days before elections (Bush 2000 [beer, DUI], Bush 2004 [National Guard], Foley 2006).

You must be a Duncan Hunter guy.

Being an occasional guest on a talk show doesn't mean you're in the news, per se. Using that threshold of judgment, we have no candidates who can introduce themselves to the public, none.

And how many times do people have to refute you're "Newt wants a Communist country and Socialized medicine" crapola? Seriously, man, cry wolf to people who don't know better.

Finishing second and third in all of the early primary polls - and by far the highest of any non-RINO - is mojo. Especially for a guy who hasn't even declared.

And you're about a century too late to get me to buy that - "GASP - a messy divorce" will lose the election!!! Tell me, did he inhale, too?

Your Duncan Hunter/Gary Bauer or Alan Keyes ticket may seem nice, but purity doesn't always mean victory.

And you have a weird memory. The Clintons and MSM whipped Newt? What are you, twelve years old?!?!? What serious, conscious human being could possibly make that claim? The House and Senate for the first time in some 40-50 years, and he got whipped? A Supermajority required for tax increases and he got whipped? Your hate blinds you, man. That or you adoration of Duncan.

Churchill would not have been pro abortion
Churchill would not have been pro gay
Churchill would not have been anit-gun
Churchill would not have paid lip service to his country's equivalent of our constitution
like Giuliani

So Giuliani got pissed off when his city was attacked. How does that equate to his overall ability to manage a global war on terror? Does he have ANY military training?

No, he is NOT a "RINO"!

Lincoln Chaffe is a RINO.

Michael Bloomberg is THE exemplar of what a RINO is.

Ron Paul is a RINO.

Rudy is NOT a RINO!

The GOP is not the party of the so far right, that they are almost left; nor is it the party solely for the fringe.

IMHO Rudy is still ascendant...Newt is hovering for the time being but generally headed down unless he changes things somehow.

He isn't going to run. Waiting until next September, means that Newt won't get ANY meaningful financial and political backing and NOBODY will be left to work on his team.

And though Newt could probably beat Obama, he can't beat Hillary or even Edwards.

You push your homosexual agenda on almost every thread you show up on. Besides.....Rudolph Giuliani is the King of the Fags. It's no wonder you adore him so much.

Cheese and crackers FA...what was the last bio of Churchill you read.

Churchill had one goal and one only...to defeat the NAZI's. He was put out of office within 3 months after the end of the War.

That's the way I feel about Rudy or any other leader in this war.

We need a specialist. We need a War-Time leader. Once it is over...kick em out and get back to bidness.

This field is bleak. Newt is the only conservative and he comes with "the baggage". It seems that the losses for Santorum and Allen knocked them out of the race, but at this stage - and with this kind of selection - I say bring 'em on. What have we got to lose; PA would be a nice electoral lynchpin.

Forget the political protocols. I'd love to see the look on McCain's face when Santorum kills his bid in SC.

The playbook was STOLEN!

No, Newt is the serial adulterer, who mistreated his wives and the tax payers, by having sexual congress, IN HIS OFFICE, DURING WORK HOURS, with a government secretary!

Rudy had PROTATE CANCER! That's NOT "chickening out" of anything, to get THAT taken care of; especially since his own father had died from that, at a rather young age.
