Republicans 2008: Giuliani 28%, McCain 20%
Angus Reid Global Monitor ^ | 1/20/2007 | Staff

Posted on 01/19/2007 2:35:59 PM PST by Dark Skies

Rudy Giuliani is still the preferred presidential hopeful for Republican Party sympathizers in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 28 per cent of respondents would support the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

Arizona senator John McCain is second with 20 per cent, followed by former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with 14 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with eight per cent.

Earlier this month, Gingrich questioned the GOP’s reliance on its conservative base, saying, "Ronald Reagan understood that arguments should be made where we have huge advantages with virtually all Americans. He was brilliant at avoiding base-narrowing appeals and emphasizing base-broadening appeals. A base-motivation party inherently, in the long run, drives away the non-base."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.

I’m pro-choice. I’m pro-gay rights, Giuliani said. He was then asked whether he supports a ban on what critics call partial-birth abortions. “No, I have not supported that, and I don’t see my position on that changing,” he responded. ANDERSON COOPER 360 DEGREES (November 14, 2006)

RUDY GIULIANI (R), FORMER MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY: I'm pro- choice. I'm pro-gay rights.

KING: Giuliani supports a woman's right to an abortion, and back in 1999, he opposed a federal ban on late-term abortions.

GIULIANI: No, I have not supported that, and I don't see my position on that changing.

KING: Immigration could be another presidential landmine. Back in 1996, Mayor Giuliani went to federal court to challenge new federal laws requiring the city to inform the federal government about illegal immigrants.

JEFFREY: He took the side of illegal immigrants in New York City against the Republican Congress.

KING: Giuliani opposes same-sex marriage but as mayor, he supported civil unions and extending health and other benefits to gay couples. He also supported the assault weapons ban and other gun control measures opposed by the National Rifle Association.

GIULIANI: I'm in favor of gun control. I'm pro-choice.

IMO, the war is the number one issue and Rudy is the guy to handle it.

The war on terror is big.....but it's also going to come down to competence.

The ball has been punted on tax reform...tort reform...entitlement reform...vouchers...border security...the ability to articulate the benefits of smaller less intrusive government.

The current administration and congress have lost sight of day to day good conservative governance.

I hope Rudy is the guy to bring it back.

I believe you are correct. I have no proof of the future but I have some small expererience.

I think Rudy has the vision and ability.

Hang onto your hat...he's gonna get the nod, I believe.

You should have added BARF ALERT to this thread. The only guy that is solid on this list is Newt Gingrich, and I just do not see him getting the nomination.

If these are the Republicans, then we are in big trouble. They are all, except for Newt, liberal. I just feel like conservatives are no longer represented even thought we are probably the majority in this country.

I feel like I want my money back concerning George Bush. He only has done two things correct.... The War on Terror (although I have a few issues in this field, but overall its a good response) and the tax cut. That is it. I am truly concerned with what is happening to this great nation.

None of course. But Churchhill really didn't have any either. It was a spiritual thing with Churchill and I believe it is a spiritual thing with Rudy also.

I could be wrong (wrong big time)...but so far I'm am backing Rudy until this war is over.

If someone comes forth who can lead us in this war better than Rudy, I will change sides immediately.

Listen, on FR, it is considered very BAD to not put the person, whom you are talking about ( not to mention insulting !), in the header.

Secondly, not only have I NEVER been a damned DEM, I've probably been a CONSERVATIVE far longer than YOU have claimed to be one. I've also been an active member of FR far longer than YOU have; not to mention the fact that I have worked on quite a number of winning political campaigns for such politicians as Ronald Reagan and both president Bushes.

May I gently suggest you read about Winnie a bit before making such statements? He graduated Sandhurst before he was 21. He served in India, he acted as an observer in the 19th century with the Spanish Royal Army as they battled Cuban guerrillas (he came under fire in that assignment). He was in a CAVALRY charge with Lord Kitchener's troops in the Sudan in 1897 I think. He was in a Boer concentration camp in South Africa and had WAY more experiences (such as the First Lord of the Sea who moved the Royal Navy from coal to oil) that made him WAY more qualified than pro-gay, pro-gun control, pro-abortion Rudy.

There you have it.. Why New Yorkers got rid of him..
NYC voters would see a surplus as a WASTE.. and a tax cut as a net loss..

Oh, he's a "hard core Republican"; he just isn't one that is so far off to the right, that he's a one issue KOOK, who nobody but other KOOKS like. :-)

LOL...I think that we will be doing a whole LOT of evaluation, for the next two years.

Unlike the UNAPPEASEABLES here, I know that we MUST beat the damed Dem, to survive. Anyone but McCain!

Republican Big-Wigs Support Pro-Abortion Event in NY

Pro-abortion Governor George Pataki and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also supports unrestricted abortion, are co-chairs of the 2000 Choice Award Presentation to be held on May 30 at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. The event is sponsored by the Republican Pro-Choice Coalition, a group that is campaigning for the removal of the pro-life plank from the Republican National Platform.

Thx. For the most part, Winnie was a journalist however. I can't determine if Winnie was a journalist when he was with Kitchener in the Sudan in 1898. But for the most part, he recorded when he wasn't escaping (as in S Africa).

Of course, his role isn't diminished whatever his entry to the action.

He was an officer with Lord Kitchener and in Cuba (and India). He was also First Lord of the Sea. If Rudy had been Secretary of the Navy, for example, that would be a good thing. He wasn't. He is a lawyer, a gun grabbing pro-abortion extremist who will NEVER get my vote.

But Rudy took on the mob in NYC. A prosecutor in NYC against the mob isn't an easy job. I lived in NYC when he came to prominence. Here is a bit from wiki about Rudy...
In 1983, Giuliani was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. It was in this position that he first gained national prominence by prosecuting numerous high-profile cases, including the successful prosecutions of Wall Street figures Ivan Boesky and Michael Milken for insider trading. He also spearheaded the effort to jail drug dealers, combat organized crime, break the web of corruption in government, and prosecute white-collar criminals. He amassed a record of 4,152 convictions with only 25 reversals.
