Republicans 2008: Giuliani 28%, McCain 20%
Angus Reid Global Monitor ^ | 1/20/2007 | Staff

Posted on 01/19/2007 2:35:59 PM PST by Dark Skies

Rudy Giuliani is still the preferred presidential hopeful for Republican Party sympathizers in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 28 per cent of respondents would support the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.

Arizona senator John McCain is second with 20 per cent, followed by former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with 14 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with eight per cent.

Earlier this month, Gingrich questioned the GOP’s reliance on its conservative base, saying, "Ronald Reagan understood that arguments should be made where we have huge advantages with virtually all Americans. He was brilliant at avoiding base-narrowing appeals and emphasizing base-broadening appeals. A base-motivation party inherently, in the long run, drives away the non-base."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.

Rudy can and WILL do that!

Newt can't and I bet he won't even enter the primary.

Dude, Rudy is falling in every Primary poll, state and national.

That was just Iowa.

This is from Rasmussen, which you cited:

Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2006:
Giuliani 31%
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/Political%20Tracking/Election%202008/Election2008.htm

January 8-11, 2007
Giuliani 28%
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/Political%20Tracking/Republican%20Primary/RepublicanPrimary20070118.htm

And I can't even link the earlier 2006 polls from Rasmussen having him over 40%! The only time he EVER went up was when he took some 80% of the otherwise-Condoleeze-Rice votes after it was clear she wasn't running. He's been dropping consistently for months now, nationally and in state primary polls.

The more the GOP voters learn about Rudy, the more they are opposed to him. And deep down, even though you like Rudy, you must know many will stay home, like myself and many Freepers.

Newt often slides into being so pedantic, that he puts people to sleep.

Churchill ALWAYS had "vision" and was prescient about world events to come, loooooooooooooong before they ever did.

OTOH, Newt NEVER has a "plan B", nor is he able to see the possible consequences of actions. You've forgotten about what happened when he shut down the government, I guess, or you aren't old enough to really remember.

To the extreme right wing, Rudy will always be a RINO. I don't have a problem with that.

I have a gun (a bunch of em)...but I am pro-choice for very complicated reasons.

Rudy's not a hardcore Republican...but he is a leader. He sees this war clearly.

I believe he is the one to lead us in this war. When its over and we have won...we can reevaluate.

I'm sorry, no Rudy backer gets to say this about ANYONE.

I've heard Rudy lisp his way through speeches, including at the last Convention. You're telling me he's better at speaking that Newt? Rudy's voice comes off as whiny, like it or not, and he tends to make weird faces. The lisp is unmistakable, as well as the anxious stuttering that sometimes happens.

You have NO claim on this one - NONE.

Come on guys..."nopardons" is a fighter for the right wing and for the war. We can fight among ourselves but let's not aid the enemy.

You must have a lobotomy! Me,ME, a Hunterite? ROTFLMSO

Newt is an almost CONSTANT feature on these shows! And he's been all over the MSM, appearing WITH Hillary, beaming at her.

Have you ever heard of the Tofflers? They write books. The last one, in a series of three, THE THRID WAVE, is new agey MAXISM; however, Newt LOVES this book and its positions and has been touting it for at least a decade. Go read the book and then get back to me.

And serious, man, not only are you completely bereft of any political knowledge, understanding, and savvy, but you are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wrong about me, that your judgment about people, is more than suspect, LOL

This is gonna be a hot election.

IMO, the war is the number one issue and Rudy is the guy to handle it. But this election is gonna require a complete redefinition of the Number One Goal.

I love W, but his big mistakes were that he didn't involve the country in this war and he never defined the enemy clearly (like his daddy, he's good buddies with the Saudis).

---"Come on guys..."nopardons" is a fighter for the right wing and for the war. We can fight among ourselves but let's not aid the enemy."---

He may be GOP, but he's not right-wing, and he seems to be twelve years old.

Just about every damn post he makes in every thread winds up being an insult or name calling. Check the history.

Only Rudy backers could make me vote Hitlery; only Rudy and his zealots. Better to lose one election than lose all of the issues I care abour permanently.
