Bush Considering Pardon for Border Agents Convicted of Shooting Mexican Drug Runner
Fox News ^ | 1/19/2007

WASHINGTON — President Bush promised to review a case for a possible pardon of two former U.S. Border Patrol agents serving time in prison for shooting a Mexican drug runner. Bush said in an interview with KFOX-TV in El Paso, Texas, Thursday that he would "take a sober look at the case" as it works its way through the appeals system.

...

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., introduced a bill on Thursday to pardon the agents, joining a growing group of supporters of the men, including Reps. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., and Ted Poe, R-Texas.

Hunter collected 76 co-sponsors on a House bill he introduced that would pardon the agents. The bill is the first of its kind in Congress, said Hunter spokesman Joe Kasper. The legislation is likely to head to the House Judiciary Committee for consideration.

"We cannot turn our back on agents Compean and Ramos or the rest of the men and women proudly serving in the U.S. Border Patrol. These two agents deserve our full support and the congressional pardon provided by this legislation," Hunter said in a statement.

Hunter also sent a letter to the director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons requesting the two former agents be segregated from the general prison population — some of which the ex-agents may have helped put away.

If the Border Patrol agents are unionized, why are the democrats so quiet on this subject? Aren't the RATS the "biggest fans" of the unions and their voters?

I disagree with Hunter seeking a congressional pardon here. I would rather they pass a resolution asking Bush to grant a pardon.

I don't like conservative usurpation of power any more than I like liberal usurpation of power.

Honestly, I don't think the pardon has any chance of going through the House. Hunter probably doesn't either. It's a way of applying pressure to the president. And at this point, I'm sure as h3ll glad someone is stepping up to the plate in that regard.

They like drug dealers and illegal immigrants too, so it's a real conundrum for them.

Yes, good idea. Important to say it just right. We have to prepare to defend it. One defense--well, he didn't owe uncle Sam 600 million.

Kind of like when they hate WAL-Mart up until the time they hire illegal aliens. Then Wal-Mart is okay.

Hunter for President. There will be no usurpation of power. The entire scheme is to apply pressure on the Pres.

"I'll look into it". This is exactly what I say to my daughter when the answer is "no" but I don't feel like arguing about it right then.

There will be no usurpation of power.

Sorry, but when Hunter talks about exploring a legal gray area that hasn't been explored regarding Congressional powers, he's lost me on this one. Under the 10th, if a power is not specifically enumerated to Congress, they don't have it. Which means I may have to re-think Hunter a bit - I don't like usurpation, period, and I want a president who sees the 10th as something to be restored, not ignored.
