A group of Methodist ministers has begun a national petition drive asking Southern Methodist University to remove itself from negotiations to get the George W. Bush presidential library.
"As United Methodists, we believe that the linking of his presidency with a university bearing the Methodist name is utterly inappropriate," reads the petition, which is posted online at ProtectSMU.org.
"Because SMU is owned by the United Methodist Church, the imposition of a George W. Bush library, museum and think tank at SMU will irreparably connect the denomination with this presidency, said Rev. Andrew J. Weaver, a petition organizer in Brooklyn, N.Y. and 1978 graduate of SMUs Perkins School of Theology. Members of the UMC, therefore, should be able to express their opinion on this matter before a final decision is reached.
Campus officials said that the petition organizers have a right to express their opinions, but they dont believe the sentiment is widespread.
Its not the least bit surprising there would be views from some segment of the movement, as large as it is, that would not want to see the library, museum and institute come to SMU, said Brad Cheves, a university vice president. However, we continue to believe that a vast majority of the Methodist and the university community support SMUs efforts.

What a bunch of self important pukeheads.
Methodists turning Stalinist too, it looks like.
The Fidel Castro Memorial Library is more apropos for these "ministers."
I'm sure the University of Central Florida will take it. Where do we apply?
Well, the Methodists do seem to be the most liberal church. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
SMU is tainted by the NCAA football "death penalty" if I recall. They were caught recruiting religiously.
Lots of commies in the upper reaches of the Methodist church. Most methodists are unaware of the far-left leanings of their top brass.
The Methodist Church....
...where politicians and liberals go to pretend to be Christians.
Good for you! They need to hear from their members, imo. Their conduct in this matter is shameful.
If you ever get a chance, take a look at the Methodistas Book of Resolutions for 2004.. It's a little look into the cream that rose to the top of that church.
It reads like the Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital with a smattering of scripture to cover up their hatred of Bush and anything Republican. They should have ended the thing with "workers of the world, UNITE!!"
Being illiterate, what use would they have of a presidential library, or even of a common one?
Was SMU in the lead? Were they even a serious contender?
The Methodists fell off the bandwagon a long time ago.
And my Mom asks why I don't go to church anymore. Maybe it was our dike minister that put me over the edge, but it was really their stance on gun control.
Sounds about right for them. In similar fashion, the new dean of students at the Methodist School of Theology at Emory University is a woman who brings the great expertise to the job of having a Phd (in political science) and she and her parents have been life-long "civil rights" activists; just what "Christian" theology students need, right?? She just left her job as the head of the national United Methodist Office titled the Women's Division, two years ahead of the four-year+ period they thought she had committed to. Maybe the fact that the United Methodist Women (national organiztion of local church women which supplies the bulk of the $$$ backing the Women's Division) saw its membership go to zero in over 750 United Methodist churches in the last two years had something to do with it. Is the United Methodist Church Women's Division's loss Emory's gain??? I wonder what the actual theology professors at Emory think.
These are probably the same Methodists who think Fidel Castro is a good guy.
