Michael J. Fox, whose advocacy ads created a stir in last fall's elections, will attend President Bush's State of the Union address next week as a guest of Rhode Island Rep. Jim Langevin.
Both are staunch supporters of embryonic stem-cell research.
Fox, 45, suffers from Parkinson's disease. As the 2006 elections neared, he appeared in television campaign ads for political candidates who support the research.
"Congressman Langevin is a tireless champion for the advancement of medical research, and I am honored to join him next week at the State of the Union," the actor said in a statement.
Langevin, who has been confined to a wheelchair since an accidental shooting that occurred when he was a teenager, addressed his colleagues in the House of Representatives last week in support of a bill that would bolster embryonic stem cell research.
The Democratic-controlled House passed the legislation, but the White House has promised to veto it.
Langevin invited Dana Reeve, Christopher Reeve's widow, as his guest to the State of the Union address in 2005. She died of lung cancer last year.
"I am sure Michael will help to further Chris and Dana's legacy and underscore for the President just how serious I am about pursuing the promise of stem cell research," Langevin said in a statement Tuesday.

I saw it. I was awesome. I thought the exact same thing.
I didn't understand everything. For instance, I don't understand what it means to say that 85% of the eye is developed at 6 weeks, but it sure stunned me to hear that, among other things.

I am suprised that Bush didn't invite him.

Good to know that the real-life Hannibal Lecter can make it.

Every time I hear this, I picture a ghoul eating an infant in the hope of getting his humanity back.
Someone please post the comparison table of therapeutic successes with adult stem cells versus embryonic stem cells.
Simply gross.

Once again only half the story gets told by the liberals.
The President is not against stem-cell research - just against government money paying for it.

Point well taken, although I would go one step farther and add that the government money is really taxpayer money, many of whom would be forced to pay for something, not in the constitution, they find abhorrent.
If individuals feel so fervently about an issue like this, why don't they start a fund or foundation for like-minded people, why insist on getting other people to pay?

"The ironic thing is Jim Langevin, while pro-embryo stem cell research, is pro-life on everything else."
There are dozens of Congressmen, Democrat and Republican alike, who are pro-life on every vote except when it comes to federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research. We need these pro-lifers to vote their conscience no matter what the media will say about them.
An interesting case is Democrat Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, who is nominally pro-life (the only Democrat Congresswoman about which that can be said) but who almost always votes for abortion funding. Kaptur bucked the trend by voting *against* federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research when it was adopted by the House in May 2005, when the veto override failed in July 2006, and just last week when it passed the House again. See
http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/bio/keyvotes/?id=467 Unfortunately, she voted with the Democrat leadership on the anti-cloning amendment to the stem-cell research bill, which failed 189-238.

Maybe Joan Rivers can wait outside on the red carpet and get a brief interview of MJF dressed as Teen Wolf before he enters the room.
