Particularly when you consider the ramifications for millions of children growing up without a two-parent family, the news that 51% of women in America now live without a spouse is serious indeed. But the decline of our culture was nothing but a laughing matter for the boys of the Early Show.
Rather than seeing any cause for concern, CBS displayed the graphic seen here blithely informing viewers: "No Husband Needed."
As Russ Mitchell threw the story to Harry Smith, he mirthfully proclaimed:
"So Harry, now there's now statistical data for what we always knew: they really don't need us, do they?"
A chuckling Smith was happy to agree: "They really don't."

It's a sad statistic. I cannot imagine life without my husband and I know my children couldn't imgagine their parents not being together.

In his case, I have to agree.
Amazing. Simply amazing.
Our kids are on their own now. And my husband and I are reveling in the time together again. I can't imagine life without him.
Neither can I. I have to play pretend single mom every now and then, and even then, because I love my dh, and we maintain as constant contact as we can, I am still miserable. So are my kids.
I will be alone for 7 months, starting in March. I will need my husband every second of that time. He is my best friend, and he is the best husband and father that I, personally, know. I can't imagine how not having that family complement is a laughing matter. I have three daughters, and having such a positive male role model will, I hope, help them to become confident, strong and well-balanced women.
So all alimony payments in the USA are henceforth suspended?
I hate it when my husband goes out of town on business, let alone having him be gone for 7 months. God bless you and your family.
Naturally they neglected to mention another statistic. Despite all the hollering about domestic violence, the numbers show that married women are LESS LIKELY to be victims of violent crime than single or divorced women.
What is a "dh"??
So Harry, now there's now statistical data for what we always knew: they really don't need us (girly men), do they?"
A chuckling Smith was happy to agree: "They really don't (they are looking for MEN)."
I'm sorry. I belong to so many message board communities, and I know this one doesn't use it, but I keep forgetting anyway.
Dh means for me dear husband, but the "d" can stand for anything, I guess LOL.
Saddened widows, hopeful unmarried young ladies, and women unwillingly divorced by their husbands can comprise a substantial portion of the 51%.
That's not freedom from men, but lack of a man.
True, but when you read that the percentage has increased from 35% in 1950 I think it's fair to say that something significant is happening, and that it's not good.
Somebody should tell Harry Smith we don't need him either.
Maybe it's the men that don't want the women.
;-)
