Is Rudy Likely to Be a Favorite or a Flop?
Real Clear Politics ^ | January 16 2007 | Stuart Rothenberg

Today's deepest division is between those political observers who believe that Rudy Giuliani is a credible contender for the Republican presidential nomination and those who think that his chances are no better than those of California Rep. Duncan Hunter.

~snip~

Giuliani's strong showing in GOP polling reflects his celebrity status and the reputation he earned after the terrorist attacks. But if and when he becomes a candidate, that will change. He will be evaluated on the basis of different things, including his past and current positions and behavior, and he'll be attacked by critics and opponents. A Giuliani nomination would also generate a conservative third-party candidate in the general election and tear the GOP apart, thereby undercutting Giuliani's electability argument.

So, the former mayor might make a terrific general election candidate, but I don't see how he can get there as a Republican.

"Rudy could give a press conference a day and I would never expect him to flub it."

I don't know if you are aware of the fact that when Rudy was Mayor, he DID hold a Press conference every single day.

He is the master of the form, always articulate, always on message, always much sharper that the reporters who were questioning him.

"Should be a riot when (and if) Rudy debates Hitlery; he'll probably get confused and defend her positions"

In your dreams. Rudy is by far the most articulate, focused speaker and debater on the American political scene today. Rudy doesn't get confused, he wipes the floor with his opponents using logic, insightful analysis, and charm. He always wins.

I refuse to vote for a man who can't follow his own religion. If he can't be a faithful Catholic, I can't trust him to be a faithful president. End of story.

That's a wasted vote.Look we have to be realistic. It's definitely going to be Hillary and Obama as her VP.They will get the women and black vote along with first time voters. The GOP cannot win with a conservative .We need the independent vote.I would rather have half a conservative than a democrat. The only two that can beat Hillary and Obama is Rudy or McCain.I will support Rudy.Look what we got in 06.

That would be a stupid move.Conservatives have to stick together on this one unless they want Hillary and Obama for 8 years, because that will definitely happen if the GOP is divided.Come on conservatives Rome wasn't built in a day.

Social issues have to be put off in this election. Our safety is far more important.Conservatives better think twice on this one ,because if Hillary get in and she will where's the social agenda along with our safety then.President Rudy sounds pretty good to me right now and I think he'll be alot tougher than you think.

There is no comparison between Hillary and Rudy, you're wrong on this one.So if Conservative think this way we have no chance in 08 and kiss 2012 away too. That's accomplishing nothing..

I always believed you're in a race to win,we cannot win with a conservative like it or not it's a fact, and Rudy would not be as bad as Hillary. What is wrong with conservatives,so lets be mad and stay home ,look what 06 did.If the conservatives do not back Rudy you better kiss the movement good bye because Hillary will have this country so far left there will be no turning back.

That makes no sense.Rudy would keep this country safe, and I'm sure the conservative right could persuade Rudy to make some concessions for their support.Hillary will change this country so much in 8 years you may never see a conservative President again.Small steps are far better than a huge kick in the ass backwards.

Believe it or not, McCain looked good lately, especially on Iraq.

So as long as he's right on the most important issue of our time, that will trump over everything else in my book.

IF we cannot see the obvious and do what we must for the party ,we cannot win ,so why even have a GOP candidate.Hillary and Obama will never be beaten by a conservative. It's McCain or Rudy and Rudy is the better choice to win.If the GOP and conservative base cannot realize this don't waste your money supporting any candidate because they have no chance in hell to win.

The Media and the republican's failure to speak up made Iraq the issue.Rudy had nothing to do with it.
