(CBS/AP) WILMINGTON, Del. -- Rudy Giuliani remains noncommittal on a possible bid for the GOP presidential nomination. The former New York mayor, however, sounded campaign-like themes in a speech to Delaware Republicans on Friday.
He said the biggest question one has to ask is, "Can you really lead the country?"'
The answer, he said, is that if he believes that he can do it, than he will. And if he doesn't, he'll support someone else.
Giuliani said the key trait a leader needs is optimism. People follow hopes, he said, and they follow dreams and solutions to problems.
The remarks came as Giuliani accepted the Pete du Pont Individual Freedom Award, named for Delaware's former Republican governor.
Giuliani got a huge benefit from 911. The medid did not dare give any credit to Gerorge W. Bush so they reveresed their take on Giuliani and made him the hero of 9/11.
We are beginning to see that he could not find his rear end with both hands and two mirrors.
Just remember that the media told us Jimmy Carter was brilliant and Ronald Reagan was stupid. I would ask you to consider what the media has been saying about Rudy over the past five years.
I'm non-committal but will support Rudy if he wins the nomination.
Who is your favorite?
lol. yeah, that's a winner./s
If a liberal like Guliani is the Republican nominee I'll vote 3rd party.
Duncan Hunter. Yeah, I know he's a long shot, but if he can get his message out, I think he can bring "Reagan Democrats" back to the GOP.
LOL. That's for sure.
What some freepers who claim to revere Reagan don't get (because they don't want to get it probably) is that he understood compromise.
Reagan was initially pro life and his position evolved over time.
This is what Reagan said about compromise in politics:
"When I began entering into the give and take of legislative bargaining in Sacramento, a lot of the most radical conservatives who had supported me during the election didn't like it. "Compromise" was a dirty word to them and they wouldn't face the fact that we couldn't get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don't get it all, some said, don't take anything.
"I'd learned while negotiating union contracts that you seldom got everything you asked for. And I agreed with FDR, who said in 1933: 'I have no expectations of making a hit every time I come to bat. What I seek is the highest possible batting average.'
"If you got seventy-five or eighty percent of what you were asking for, I say, you take it and fight for the rest later, and that's what I told these radical conservatives who never got used to it.
~~ Ronald Reagan, in his autobiography, An American Life .
Sorry Rudi. You did a tremendous job at 9/11 and although you are a Republican, you are still a liberal.
I hope Duncan Hunter takes the POTUS job instead.
What are Hunter's views that you like? I'm trying to find out more. I'm so sold on Paul, though. I haven't been this exited about a candidate in years, lol.
Rudy Guiliani has said on national TV that he doesn't believe in the private ownership of handguns. That stand alone disqualifies him for national office. Mr. Guiliani believes that abortion should remain legal. I'm one of the more moderate Freepers on the abortion issue, but I don't believe that most abortions should be legal. I may have to compromise on some details, but I'm not interested in starting with a candidate on the other side.
I appreciate what Mr. Guiliani has done in New York City, but he and his supporters don't seem to understand that most of us outside New York City don't want to live the way people in New York City live.
Another strategic point against Mr. Guiliani is that he isn't capable of delivering core, conservative voters to the polls on election day. He may bring in many new voters, but they will be liberals and moderates who will vote for Democrats for Congressional seats. If the Republicans want to regain Congress, they need a candidate who can bring back the conservative voter.

I agree. Evidence of your analysis came be seen in the CT Senate race last year. It featured a Moveon candidate and Joe Lieberman. Republican operatives thought having Lieberman at the top of the ticket would protect the vulnerable GOP Congresscritters. They were wrong. With two liberals running for Senate, conservatives had little reason to vote. Also, the people, who voted for Lieberman, turned around and voted for the RAT Congressional candidate. CT lost 2 GOP Congresscritters last year.
Thanks for the post. You've looked at this whole idea more closely than I have. Your evidence is very strong.
