It is axiomatic that Democrats are profoundly guilty in spades, of EXACTLY what they accuse the GOP of being or doing.

One only has to look at new House Speaker Pelosi to see this axiom in action. After years of lambasting the GOP congress for laziness, partisanship and corruption, she was hardly into her first 100 hours before ordering a day off because of an evening football game, locking the GOP out of any discussion of new legislation, and then passing a nationwide minimum wage bill for all employers except the Samoan tuna plant of DelMonte/Starkist, which is headquartered in her home district of San Francisco.

Democrat, Hypocrisy is thy name.

Yes Sir! Draining the swamp of corruption! Vote for more liberal house cleaning in 08. Thank you Queen Pelosi. The liberal Monarch is marching smoothly along for the foolish American people who were stupid enough to believe that the liberal party was "untouchable" in the climate of corruption in Washington.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me!

A few things to comment on:
(since I live down here)

1. The employees at Star-kist number in the thousands.

2. Most of the employees at Star-Kist are Western Samoans.

3. Most of the employees are being paid $3.25 an hour.

4. Star-Kist is the largest private employer on island, and thus provide most of the taxes.

5. The local Government is the largest employer on island, providing over half the jobs, mostly to American Samoans.

6. Star-Kist routinely advances their tax dollars to the local government, and the government would shut down without it.

7. The local government just doubled their electrical costs charged to the cannery, and Star-Kist, in response, just brought in their own generators to provide their own electricity at a much cheaper rate.

8. If the feds impose the minimum wage law, the canneries WILL leave American Samoa. So will all the foreign citizens (approximately 35,000 in number).

9. In the end, the inclusion of American Samoa will turn this island into the Gaza Strip of the Southern Hemisphere.

Is 3.25 enough for someone to live on? Is there a way to "live locally" so that it is possible to have a decent standard of living at that rate?

Do most Star-Kist and COTS workers make only minimum or are there opportunities to advance?

I see that minimum wages are not set by Congress, but by a board of local government and industry. Looks like it is another example of federal exemption based on local conditions.

Whatever, it the issue is important enough that Gov Togiola left Hawaii right after a kidney stone operation to lobby Washington to leave Samoa with existing agreements.

$3.25 is enough for someone to live on down here, and there are opportunities to advance.

I find it inetersting to see that not only did the Governor shoot off to Washington, the talk here is that Pelosi never really agreed to include American Samoa again, despite the "comments" regarding her backtracking. Supposedly, she just said it would be looked into.

so all is well with our exemption... /sarcasm
