WASHINGTON - An order from President Bush authorized a series of U.S. raids against Iranians in Iraq as part of a broad military offensive, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Friday.
Bush issued the order several months ago, Rice told The New York Times as she prepared to visit the Middle East. She said the president acted "after a period of time in which we saw increasing activity" among Iranians in Iraq "and increasing lethality in what they were producing."
Five Iranians were detained by U.S.-led forces this week after a raid on an Iranian government liaison office in northern Iraq, a move that has frayed even further the relations between the two countries. The United States accuses Iran of helping provide roadside bombs that have killed American troops in Iraq, and a bitter standoff already exists over Tehran's nuclear program.

If the dems have their way they'll need an authorization to investigate murders, robberies...
Time to "Tango"!!...;0)
The Iranian men, weapons, money, and IED's streaming into Iraq that are killing Americans as we speak, would have been considered provocation in Patton's day.
That is exactly the problem - "magical thinking." To some extent, though, I guess you could say every one of these world-domination movements, including Hitler's, has engaged in it. Islam is just different because it's been engaging in it for so long, and being fairly successful when it the technologies were equal (one reason Iran should not get nukes). Being crazy gives one a definite edge over one's enemy.
And you're right, massive destruction is the only thing that makes them get real. We haven't really inflicted massive destruction on Islam. Every now and then, the West fights them back, but then when the Muslims retreat to the Middle East, we don't pursue them but just figure the problem is solved at least for that generation. But it will always come back until some massive destruction is inflicted on them. Personally, I'm for destroying Mecca, because I don't think they care enough about the average Muslim citizen to care if all of Tehran is vaporized. But their black rock, on the other hand...
Why would you want to introduce objective historical perspective into a thread?
Indeed. Isn't it something that it's a Dem that's standing by Bush publically on this and not one weak-livered Pub to be seen. Instead we get the likes of Hagel, Snowe and the RINO Chorus singing "We Wring Our Hands Again"...Feh...!
The 2006 election was the republicans the lose, and they did everything they could to ensure that they did. Congratulations you damfools.
point of order please....
what is the difference between a Laison Office nd a Consulate?
"..The liaison office that was raided issues travel permits for Iraqis traveling to Iran and other consular tasks and is on a waiting list to be officially declared a consulate. Technically, according to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, the Iranians working in the liaison are not diplomats..."
Doesn't matter.
Joe ran on "democrat, except on Iraq / National Security" and won easily, even after loosing the primary, so I'm sure he feels comfortable in that position.
If you were somehow single-issue enough, you'd be more comfortable with Joe than about a dozen republicans I could name just of the top of my head.
I don't understand how you can think that he will change his stripes. Maybe people think Joe will spite the rats? Joe is going to do what is best for Joe.
I like that. I think Bush should keep approving raids all the way to Tehran!!
Woopee another one bites the dust.
If he did approve raids all the way to Tehran, we could be there by Sunday morning.
About time. We should be stopping the supplies at the border by taking them out in Iranian territory.
We need to strike the tent of Ahmadamadajadahadajad.
