Bush approved raids on Iranians in Iraq

WASHINGTON - An order from President Bush authorized a series of U.S. raids against Iranians in Iraq as part of a broad military offensive, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Friday.

Bush issued the order several months ago, Rice told The New York Times as she prepared to visit the Middle East. She said the president acted "after a period of time in which we saw increasing activity" among Iranians in Iraq "and increasing lethality in what they were producing."

Five Iranians were detained by U.S.-led forces this week after a raid on an Iranian government liaison office in northern Iraq, a move that has frayed even further the relations between the two countries. The United States accuses Iran of helping provide roadside bombs that have killed American troops in Iraq, and a bitter standoff already exists over Tehran's nuclear program.

Did you read the entire press release? You might want to put your quote in context with the rest of the press release. It takes a strong person to admit failure. Bush did so and is taking corrective action. Lieberman is supporting the change in course and openly supporting the President without taking cheap shots, to the dismay of most Democrats in Congress. That hardly constitutes a reason to paint with a very broad brush and throw Lieberman under the bus. Also consider the fact that Lieberman is likely to be a key swing vote in the Senate for at least the next two years. If Senate Republicans have half a brain (I am not sure that many do), they will go out of their way to not alienate Lieberman through foolish political posturing and chest pounding.

Iranian terrorist

Now, are these Iranian terrorist or Al Qa'eda. When I hear that foreign born fighters are in Iraq (the way the media puts it), I think of Al Qa'eda. I know that Syrians and Iranians are there. But I also think Al Qa'eda is there too.

Hey I may be wrong, but I look at his voting record and he is a liberal except on the WOT.

I think you may be right...Sooner or later were gonna have a showdown with Iran. Better now than after they get nukes.

Are you suggesting that we should kiss his keyster?

Let's see how he votes.

glad the CiC signed off, however, it seems a slow action to take place. Simply allow the Commanders on the ground to do it, and save time.

My first thought exactly. I'm a little disappointed that the field commanders felt needed permission to step on these Iranian cockroaches. Maybe this is adjunct to the "13 rules of engagement" that that Rush caller (Iraq veteran) earlier this week was warning about.

That is excellent advice.

I have always wondered what the use of a single large scale nuclear device on a major Muslim city would do to the relations between Islam and the West. Many on the left suggest it would result in undying enmity. I suspect just the opposite would happen. I think it would shock the Muslim world out of their magical thinking. The Arab world in particular would not miss the disappearance of 4-5 million Teheranis. It would also get their attention. If we are willing to demonstrate our resolve with the Iranians, the rest of the muslim world would suddenly grasp the seriousness of our intent. The Japanese were magical thinkers right up until nuclear weapons went off in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Suddenly they became rational thinkers.

Do you think that we are going to see Lieberman change the way he votes? Or is he going to vote the way his constituency wishes to be represented? I think that Connecticut is Socially liberal and economic/militarily Conservative. I think that is the way Leiberman votes no matter who kisses his keyster.

It is true that it is not a good idea to go around alienating people, but I think with Joe we should let him be Joe. He is doing a fine job at that.

I think this would be the quickest and easiest way to change things.

The only downfall is all the whining you would have to put up with from the French and liberals.

Do you think that we are going to see Lieberman change the way he votes?

To some extent, yes. Remember, Lieberman was stabbed in the back by his own party. He is now officially "independent", and in no way beholden to Harry Reid or the Democrat Party. That is, the Democrat Party is in absolutely no position to "whip" a vote out of him.

So yeah, the GOP may get a little help from time to time.

Regards,
LH

OK, then do you know how the people of Connecticut stand on Gun Control, abortion, prayer in school, and gay marriage? Will he follow the peoples will or will he be a thorn in the Demoratic side?

Like they stand in every other state I guess - - a state's concentrated parasite nests ("cities") vote Democrat, and the normal, traditional, hard-working, taxpaying American families in the rest of the state vote Republican.

Ok, I am willing to give Joe a chance, but sometimes you can't change a donkey's minds.

Maybe, Joe has been jolted. But I see Joe doing what he has to do to get reelected. I think Connecticut follows a socially liberal agenda. And this is where I expect his vote to fall.

I may be wrong.
