Pelosi backtracks, now says Samoa NOT exempt - FOX

Video link on foxnews website, www.foxnews.com left side of the screen..

According to FoxNews, pelosi now says Samoa is INCLUDED..

Her trickle-up theory apparently won't go over very well with the people there, as their representative had this to say (pay attention to para 2) regarding the devastation of the Samoan economy if this goes through:

"In a statement in response today, Faleomavaega (American Samoa delegate) said "despite recent claims made by the Washington Post which suggest that American Samoa is exempt from the federal minimum wage process, I wish to set the record straight." He says since 1956, the Wage and Hour Division of the US Department of Labor has conducted Special Industry Committees every two years in American Samoa to determine minimum wage increases.

"While these Industry Committees have been phased out in other US Territories due to their more diversified economies, American Samoa continues to be a single industry economy. In fact, more than 80% of our private sector economy is dependent either directly, or indirectly, on two U.S. tuna processors, Chicken of the Sea and StarKist. As has been repeatedly stated at our Special Industry Committees, a decrease in production or departure of one or both of the two canneries in American Samoa could devastate the local economy resulting in massive layoffs and insurmountable financial difficulties," the Congressman says.

"For this very reason, I do not support efforts to apply mainland minimums to American Samoa at this time. The truth is the global tuna industry is so competitive that it is no longer possible for the federal government to demand mainland minimum wage rates for American Samoa without causing the collapse of our economy and making us welfare wards of the federal government."

"aren't the 100 hours up yet?"

At 2 hours a day 3 days a week it will take a while.

They're only counting "active legislative" hours in which a Democrat is talking or insulting a childless cabinet member.

In the "101st hour" (read June) they plan to redefine the meaning of "is"....

More news at 11.

I guess they only count the hours when they are discussing or voting on one of nanny's pet projects? Isn't that just like a dem, make a commitment and then define and redefine the commitment to your advantage!!!!

Does anybody know how they are actually counting the Hours? Have rules been set or does nancy just decide at the end of each day how many hours she has used?

I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW!

Nazi Pelosi's husband sits on the Board of Directors of Starkist Tuna. Nice ethical Congress you got there, my dear.

Just a question for you smart FReepers:

If the House should decide it no longer wants Queen Nancy as its ruler, what is the procedure to get rid of her?

Why not have the Republicans in the U.S. Senate successfully filibuster the minimum wage legislation unless there's significant business tax cuts, business economic incentives, and business deregulations added to the final legislation!

This event reminded me of a story about Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), a liberal group. The story was posted on FR in October 2004. An excerpt (original story from NRO):

ACORN's hypocrisy also extends to its stand on the minimum wage. While it has often attempted to force minimum-wage increases on private businesses through ballot initiatives and local ordinances, ACORN tried to exempt itself from California's minimum-wage requirements. According to EPI, "ACORN argued that being forced to pay higher wages would mean that they would hire fewer employees — the very dilemma faced by businesses. Incredibly, ACORN stated that paying its employees a lower wage would allow them to be more sympathetic to the low- and moderate-income families they were attempting to help. ACORN argued that abiding by the state minimum wage would limit their ability to promote their agenda and would therefore be a violation of their First Amendment rights."

The liberal hypocrisy on minimum wage didn't start with Pelosi, I guess.

I bet she's pissed at FR for blowing this one up in her face.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

She would be pissed at FR anyway, and will try to shut conservative news groups and conservative on line communities down.

If NanNan is pissed at anyone on this issue, it will be congressman McHenry. He's a cool dude. Imagine Duncan Hunter as President with McHenry as V.P.

I would be a VERY happy camper.

Will there be hearings? Will there be an investigation?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Actually that would be a good idea. A house investigation into the Starkist connection, and exemption of Samoa from minimum wage legislation.

This is (ahem) the equivalent of stock value manipulation.

Impeach Pelosi!

We should start a pool to guess when the 100 hours will be over.

"aren't the 100 hours up yet?"

I think they only count hte hours where they are actually working - about 2 hours a day, 1-2 days a week.

What do we pay these people? I'm pretty sure it's over 175K per year plus bene's for life.

Not even that..they only count the hours that they're working on her "100 hour agenda"..according to her website, the dems have only used 23 hours and 34 minutes leaving 76 hours and 26 minutes LEFT on their "first 100 hours"..at this rate, 100 hours will last all year..

Democrats do strange things with numbers in their emotional zeal to twist facts.

like... The Million Man March...

100,000 new polie officers...

reductions in rate increases are actually decreases...

inflated protest march numbers (and deflated counter-protest counts)...

Good news! I was at Costco and the brand is Chicken of the Sea, not Starkist. But... The bad news is that it's up to $11.89 for 12 cans from $10.99 the last time I bought it!

98 cents a can for solid white albacore isn't bad though!

lol,,,They get paid? Who authorized that?

Seriously if they really think so much of the minimum wage and Social Insecurity and they really identify with average Americans then they should volunteer. Better yet join Social Insecurity and work for minimum wage.

Maybe that's their scheme. Well I can dream can't I? Or did they tax & control that too?

Having played football in the Old Days with many Samoans, I have to agree with you. I know it's a huge generality to say so, but they are as tough as any people I've ever known.

Kinda like Nicky Santoro from the great Scorcese movie "Casino". De Niro's character describes Nicky as such:

"No matter how big a guy might be, Nicky would take him on. You beat Nicky with fists, he comes back with a bat. You beat him with a knife, he comes back with a gun. And if you beat him with a gun, you better kill him...because he'll keep coming back...until one of you is dead."

Many Samoans (living in southern California at least) are related, and you take on one Samoan, you take on the family. So you don't want to take them on, take my word.
