Explosions Rocks U.S. Embassy in Athens

Associated Press

Friday, January 12, 2007

ATHENS, Greece - Police cordoned off streets around the U.S. Embassy in Athens early Friday after an explosion inside the embassy compound.

Authorities searched nearby apartment buildings and a hospital amid reports that an explosive device may have been fired at the building. The blast smashed glass in the front of the building, near the U.S. emblem of the embassy.

"I heard a loud bang I didn't realize what was going on," said Giorgos Yiannoulis, who runs a kiosk near the embassy.

The most recent Fox report said, "The blast ripped through the MAIN EMBASSY BUILDING."

They've probably got to get it cleared by a bomb squad and also debris cleared before they can get in.

Kinda makes you wonder, doesn't it. I mean especially after the sniper video and all.

"Blast At U.S. Embassy In Athens"

January 12th, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The senior police official did not say whether the explosion was set off inside the compound or whether something might have been thrown into the embassy grounds.

Police officials at the scene said that whatever caused the explosion damaged the official embassy sign outside the mission, but there was little other indication of the extent of damage inside.

The tightly guarded building is surrounded by a 3-meter (9-feet)-high steel fence. Guards are posted at every entrance and at street corners around it.

Embassy officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Local residents called in to state television saying they had felt the explosion, which shattered some windows."

The US Embassy in Athens and the consular services in Thessaloniki will be closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King’s birthday, a US national holiday.

If I remember right - they went to Cyprus and then to Athens airport. I honestly don't know how our Americans were received at that time.

The "good" news is that it appears the explosion happened around 5AM local time, meaning not many people would be there.

"Gotta be but the Greeks ain't too crazy about the US either. Remember they even had a big protest when Clinton went there."

IIRC, Greece is the only nation that did not condemn the USSR for shooting down KAL flight 007. I don't have a source for that info, just my memory... as my dad used to take that flight regularly and my wife is Greek.

It's still breaking news, or so it seems.

Updates can change a story as reporters rush to put
their stories up.

I was stationed in the Embassy for three years, 1992-95. The only real threat at that time was the November 17th terrorist group, which enjoyed some protection from Greek government officials. The only way something could be brought into the main Embassy compound is by an employee, especially at that time of the morning.

Greece has always been lax in terms of security. It has been an entry point to Europe for some Middle Eastern terrorists. Hopefully, more information will become available.

Is she on LKL? I missed her on Leno last night because the tab TV show I saw said she and Bindi were going to be on Letterman and I waited thru the whole show, then found out this morning Terri was on Leno - Bindi was too tired to go on with her.

I wondered at the time why in the world they were going to go to NYC the very day they flew in to L.A. Leno made more sense. All I saw was a clip when she broke down crying.

Now they are talking about an RPG being fired from across the street, which makes sense.
