Explosions Rocks U.S. Embassy in Athens
Associated Press
Friday, January 12, 2007
ATHENS, Greece - Police cordoned off streets around the U.S. Embassy in Athens early Friday after an explosion inside the embassy compound.
Authorities searched nearby apartment buildings and a hospital amid reports that an explosive device may have been fired at the building. The blast smashed glass in the front of the building, near the U.S. emblem of the embassy.
"I heard a loud bang I didn't realize what was going on," said Giorgos Yiannoulis, who runs a kiosk near the embassy.

Marine guards would be there 24/7, but probably not many other folks.

N17 appeal
A council of appeals court judges decided yesterday that two members of the November 17 terrorist group, Savvas Xeros and Dimitris Koufodinas, should not face charges in connection with an explosion in January 2001 at the entrance to an apartment block where former defense minister Vassilis Michaloliakos lived. Michaloliakos and another man were slightly injured in the blast and a 58-year-old woman died from a heart attack. The judges decided that witness statements about the incident were not reliable. In a few days, N17 members are due to begin testifying in their appeal, which is being held in a specially constructed courtroom at Korydallos Prison.
Greece is terror friendly. Anti-American hatred goes back decades, rooted in strong left wing parties. American diplomats have been murdered there in the past; by Greek leftists. Greek security services have been lax at monitoring Muslim terror groups.
That said, the embassy should have been largely empty at the time the blast was reported. Some USMC security guards, perhaps a Duty Communicator and a few sloppy, sleepy, Athens cops near the entrances. Let's pray no one is hurt.
What they saying it could be terror bomb blast who did it Iranians Syrians or damn Mormons

"The group's last known attack was made in May of 1995 when it fired two anti-tank rockets at a Greek television network building. The television network was called a capitalist tool. There were no injuries in the attack."
No Americans would normally be in the building at 0555 in the morning except the Marine Security Guards who would be in the lobby area. When I was there, the cleaning crews came in around 0630 and were escorted by the MSGs. There were also a few Greek employees who came in to produce summaries of Greek newspapers. US Communications personnel came in around 0700. Whoever attacked the Embassy was apparently not interested in inflicting personnel casualties.
thanks...
The guards probably, but I would be guessing.

State-run NET television, quoting police, first reported the explosion occurred inside the main embassy building on the third floor, but the network later said police told them the explosion happened outside the building.
