The social-service industry thinks otherwise. One of its principal lobbies, the Children's Alliance, paid a visit to The Seattle Times the other day to promote its proposals for the Legislature a Legislature likely to be favorable. One of the group's proposals was that the state should pay for a free lunch to kids from families in the $26,000-to-$37,000 income bracket for a family of four. These kids have been offered a lunch that is reduced in price but not free.

Makes you wonder when congress will mandate free breakfast and lunch for minimum wage workers.
Soon, son, soon. Years ago I had a woman clean house for me. She had two children to see off to school each morning. One morning I called and she was in bed. I asked her why she was in bed, and she told me that the children were now eating breakfast in school and she didnt have to get up any more. So her 8 year old and her 11 year old got up and dressed and walked to nanny school and she slept in.
Disgusting.
Are you saying that homeschooling isn't the answer to much?
The fact remains that the vast majority of people cannot home school and not many SHOULD even if they could. Given the level of ignorance about subjects which need to be taught few children would receive a proper education.
Few parents can teach math, languages, grammar, history, science or any other subject which has any substance to it.
Even on FR the level of misinformation, distorted information and just plain old false information is staggering.
You said a mouthful there!!!!
Absolutely.
It seems many students are NOT learning much "math, languages, grammar, history, science or any other subject which has any substance to it" in the Public Schools.....for those who would WANT to try....more power to them....they do NOT need advanced educations.....just motivation to find the resources....IMHO.
who want to try HOMESCHOOLING...that should read.
Whose "fact"? Actually you claim many "facts". Where are they? Got links?
I see, your opinion stands in for "facts".
Well, it's one answer to a few things.
"It seems many students are NOT learning much "math, languages, grammar, history, science or any other subject which has any substance to it" in the Public Schools....." It seems you are completely wrong.
Perhaps you should examine the curriculums at good schools before revealing your lack of knowledge.
95%+ of our Armed Forces are public school graduates. Public education is partially responsible for this being one of the most literate, most productive societies in history.
I purposely did NOT say ALL..... many are falling between the dumbed down cracks of our public education system where in many schools they don't teach advanced math, true history, or require proper English....and I think you know that.....
I'm kinda slow, so maybe you can help me out here: ...the answer to much...what?
I don't think it is just schools with horrible nutrition, just look in your own cupboards. I'm sure you could find processed foods, sodas, "fake" foods, sugary treats. This the the way of the nation.
They (and I have never quite figured out who this group of people called "they" are) say that people live longer than our ancestors...the only reason we live longer is because there are better drugs keeping us alive. Who do you know that doesn't take at least one drug to help with some medical problem?
Our food is still killing us. It is full of chemicals, antibiotics, and hormones.
LOL.....LOOK in MY cupboards.....we eat like about 3% of the population.....you probably wouldn't believe it....but, I agree that the food many people eat is less than stellar.....and I predict as others have that the next generation will NOT live longer than this one....with its current eating style.
And the schools which failed to give them the tools to teach 'subjects with any substance' can teach their kids? Hah! And some education major whose one math class was "math for teachers" can do a better job?
It is a false solution to real problems.
Oh?
It works for my family.
Have you tried it?
Those schools under seige by the underclass and its advocates have great difficulties (none of which HS will solve) but the vast majority of schools have a number of advanced placement courses as well as advanced courses in sciences, courses in languages. Most homeschool advocates wave their inability to teach such courses off with a "well they can take it from a junior college" which begs the question.
My children went to private and public schools and any failings in their educations were their faults not those of the schools. I attended public school in southern Arkansas and had an excellent preparation for college. My late wife was a teacher in inner city Chicago and it became clear that the GREATEST problem with children getting educated was their PARENT (it was rare to find parents) not the schools.
It works for some students because of the PARENTS. In the vast majority of those cases the child would have done very well in the schools as long as the parents were involved.
My children are grown.
