Living in the Philippines while in the Navy.
Went into a sari-sari (small convenience) store for a pack of smokes.
Saw the cashier and was smitten. The thunderbolt had hit me.
Went back daily until she knew me as a regular customer.
Our first date was to make American style chili.
She put me on my back with a leg sweep early in our dating (long story).
We've been married almost 24 years now.
The Navy counselers said we had a 97% chance of divorcing before the first 5 years. HA!

My sweetie & I were married withing two weeks of meeting each other in a night club.
After 21 years we are not sure this marriage thing will work ~ we have agreed to give it another twenty years or so.

My golden retriever "Bart" introduced us to each other about 7 years ago, at a beach called Kanaha. She lived on the mainland and her job took her to Maui almost monthly. She would stop by to see if he, Bart, was there. Little did we know that we were made for each other, but Bart knew from day one.
We were married May 4th last year, and Bart was the ring bearer. He was old, arthritic, and blind, but he lived to see me marry the most wonderful woman on the planet. He is buried in the front yard now, a Plumeria tree planted on top of him, and we have a new golden retriever named "Zeke". But I will never forget my best friend, a we will always thank him for what he gave us, his unconditional love, and each other.

You will. And it will come from the least expected place and time. Sounds corny but it's completely true.

My mom wanted me to spend the summer in 1979 with my sister and brother-in-law on Guam (he was in the Air Force) . After a few weeks of being a beach bum, I went to the bowling alley on base with a couple of other teen-aged girls. My future husband heard my southern drawl and asked to be introduced to me.
My heart literally skipped a beat. I can still smell his cologne. I can tell you the funny shirt he had on. I never let him throw it away. It is still in our attic and has survived many moves with the Coast Guard. We will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this September. We are now much older and we have two beautiful (and smart) daughters.
It is so strange, because we both knew almost immediately that we would one day be married.

I guess tragedy just runs in some families. Sometimes I wonder if there is any way to escape it. For a brief time, when I had my fiancee, I thought I had... I guess I was fooling myself.
