~Love Stories~ How did you meet the love of your life?

At Last My Love Has Come Along Dedicated to To My Dear Husband, Peter by Anonymous My husband is currently serving in Iraq, and I dedicate our love story to all the soldiers whose love crosses the world this Valentine's Day. At the end of my first date with a man named Peter, I heard a perfect stranger telling him "he had better marry that girl".

The story goes like this.... I was asked out on during summer break by a man with whom I attended college. I was a nervous woman, but we had a fabulous time together in downtown Houston, Texas. Our night ranged from a Chinese restaurant for dinner, to St. Petes Dancing Marlin for strawberry cheesecake, until we arrived at a jazz cafe named the Red Cat Lounge. Peter had been a perfect gentleman all night, and I let him know I was ready to leave the jazz cafe as the night wore on. He kept stalling and saying that we would leave soon. After our agreed upon thirty minutes, I stood up and told Peter "Let's go". Well, that's when the lead singer of the band looked at me and said "You can't leave yet". At that moment, the lead singer looked at me and said "This is for the woman with the beautiful green eyes" and began playing the song "At Last" by Etta James.

Peter knew that was my favorite song and had apparently secretly requested it be played for me. He had never heard the song before, and did not even know it was a love song until he heard the chorus that night. "At Last My Love Has Come Along, My Lonely Days Are Over, and Life is Like a Song" is the chorus, and little did we both know that night the song actually had come true in the beginning of our love relationship. At the end of the song, the lead singer turned to Peter and said "you better marry that girl".

How pleased would that perfect stranger be to know that "At Last" was the first song that Peter and I danced to as a newlywed couple exactly two years later on May 29, 2005. Since we have married, Peter and I have longed to visit Hawaii to celebrate our love and our marriage. The thought of lying on the beach at night, sipping margaritas while lying in a hammock, while feeling the ocean breeze on our faces is a dream. To walk along the beach at night, explore the lushness and the vegetation, and to experience the mystery of the island would be a priceless experience.

I am planning on surprising my husband with a trip to Hawaii when he returns from his tour in Iraq. After being apart, I can't even envision the joy it would bring to be together in a fantasy land "at last".

I used to work as a probation officer in western Washington State. I had one difficult parolee who kept reoffending. I was forever convincing him to go to the eastern side of the state—out of my jurisdiction. Once there, he'd reoffend and another parole officer would get him to move back west! Finally, this other officer and I decided to meet to discuss the problem. "This other officer" is now my wife. We didn't invite the probationer to the wedding. —Bill O'Connor, Anchorage, Alaska

Late one night I heard someone banging around in the hallway outside my apartment door. It was so loud, I finally got up to investigate. When I opened my door, a man fell into my kitchen—passed-out drunk. I tried to shove him back into the hall, but he was too heavy. Instead, I left him on the floor, went to my bedroom, pushed the dresser in front of my door, and went back to sleep. Not long after, I married the lug.

Her Dad took over the restaurant I was bartending at. Brought along his wife and two daughters to help with the transition. After introductions, I then left for a vacation. Didn't even know if I still had a job, but for some reason couldn't stop thinking about the brown-eyed girl I'd met the week before.

When I returned, my new boss indicated that he wanted me to stay on. That weekend, I was setting up the theater bar that I ran on the top level of the building. His wife came up and asked if I needed anything before the patrons started arriving. I indicated that all I needed at that point was someone to help with the soft drinks during the halftime (intermission) rush. She asked if I had anyone in mind, and before I knew what I was saying, I said "send your daughter".

Once again, I didn't know if I still had a job. :-)

But lo and behold, here comes the daughter at halftime. We went out after work, and talked until sunrise.

I never believed in love at first sight until I met her.

Mine was not loss due to death, but loss due to abandonment. Some argue the latter is worse, because at least when you bury the loved one, you can hold them dear to your heart knowing that they're in a better place and you'll meet again one day. What do you do when the person who promised you they'd never leave, runs away without even having the courtesy to tell you so ? The injustice of that is unbearable.

Forgive me, I don't wish to sound like I'm diminishing your loss. Two different losses, but horrible, nonetheless.

My employer hired two new cashiers in 1994. We did not date until I quit in 1995. Even then it took a breakup and me moving two thousand miles away before we decided to marry.

I can not help but respond to this one. It brings up such wonderful emotions. I can see, oh so very clearly in my minds eye, so otherwise prone to blindness, two extraordinarily beautiful girls walking up to the counter of the building supply company where I worked as a younger man. The first one died, but the second one has been my wife for 20 some years now. Twice blessed.

My husband and I met on IRC chat (Dalnet) in 1996. Hanging around in the same channel we eventually realized our separate moves would put us about 3 hours apart, which in internet terms was like next door lol We chatted alot over the next few weeks, and he sent a wav file of himself talking- so I had to go and buy and install a CD Rom and sound card to hear it (opening the case for the first time and doing that sealed my future as computer obsessed). I don't know what was more exciting- hearing a voice come out of the computer, or hearing his voice. He requested a photo, so I cropped my head out of a family group shot, for which I was teased mercilessly for his "needing a magnifying glass" to see me. Eventually we made the trip to meet each other at the halfway point- Asheville, NC. I insisted on the airport- a big public place- just in case he was a serial killer. We ended up sitting on a bench outside the Biltmore entrance (we couldn't afford the tour) for most of the day just talking. It was about a year and a half after that we got married. 2007 will be 10 years!

About 43 years ago in So California my future father-in-law asked if I would help him one weekend work on the vacation cabin he was building.

I showed up on the Saturday morning and guess what, his wife and stepdaughter were there also. She was home on leave from the Army. I found out later her mother had planned the whole thing.

The following year we were married in an Army Chapel at Ft. Belvoir, VA. It's the best thing that ever happened to me.

PS: I have a great mother-in-law. :-)

My wife and I met at a small, Christian college in Marshall, Texas (now, East Texas Baptist University).

At that time, meals in the college dining hall were served, "family style", and an upperclass man and woman were assigned as "host" and "hostess" for each table. I was host at our table, and our hostess (for our otherwise all-male group) graduated at the end of my junior year.

The next fall, this lovely young redhead sat herself down in our hostess' place (at the opposite end of the table from me).

One of the customs of the time (it probably would be called, "hazing", now) was for all the upperclassmen to clink their forks on their glasses, and to say, "Freshmen -- on your feet!". And then we would sing, "'Round the table you must go!" (to the tune of "London Bridge" until the Frosh had made several circuits around their own tables.

But the new redheaded girl just sat there. So, I explained the custom to her. (Still sat there.) So, I mouthed off, "If you are going to sit at our table, you are going to have to learn to be a better sport than that!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Like a spider peering out from beneath a rock, she glared at me from under her bangs, and, with a chill in her voice that 'frosted my glasses', she replied. "I am a Junior transfer student."
OOoooops!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As the year wore on, it seemed to be a logical thing for us to stroll over to Vesper services together after Dinner. Then, it seemed natural for us to spend time after Vespers sitting together on one of the park benches beneath the low-hanging live oak trees in the "Pair Orchard" near her dorm.

It was on our favorite bench that we discovered that we were supremely comfortable praying together. And, it was about that time that I began to realize that she was someone very special...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A year later, on our honeymoon, we dropped by the college for her graduation. That was 45 wonderful years ago. Now we have a son, two daughters, five granddaughters and one grandson.
We still enjoy praying together -- and we never part -- even to go to the mailbox -- without a kiss. And I still hurrry ahead to open doors for her. And we still hold hands...
I simply cannot imagine life without my wonderful wife!!!
(She now admits that she worked in the Dean of Students' office and was responsible for host/hostess assignments. She checked me out (including my IQ/achievement scores) -- and assigned herself as hostess at my table!) And, am I ever thankful that she did!!!
