Unswayed by anti-war passions, President Bush will send 21,500 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and build the American presence there toward its highest level to quell worsening bloodshed. The move puts Bush on a collision course with the new Democratic Congress and runs counter to advice from some senior generals.
Set to announce his decisions in a prime-time speech Wednesday night, Bush was to acknowledge making major mistakes in Iraq, primarily failing to deploy enough U.S. soldiers and demand more Iraqi troops and cooperation to confront the country's near-anarchy.
In advance of Bush's address, White House counselor Dan Bartlett said U.S. military operations have been "handcuffed by political interference by Iraqi leadership" but now will proceed under rules allowing troops to confront Shiite militias as well as Sunni insurgents.

The new Democratic leaders of Congress met with Bush and complained afterward that their opposition to a buildup had been ignored. "This is the third time we are going down this path. Two times this has not worked," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "Why are they doing this now? That question remains."
Senate and House Democrats are arranging votes urging the president not to send more troops. While lacking the force of law, the measures would compel Republicans to go on record as either bucking the president or supporting an escalation.

They don't give a shit. 1.5 million dead Cambodians and Vietnamese attest to that fact. The fact of the matter is that the bleeding heart liberals hearts only bleed for themselves. F'em all.
If they wanted to succeed, why would we need 150,000 troops there two to three years after we went there and after Saddam Hussein is dead?
"Hillary should be afraid.."
Hillary staffers are hard at work digging up dirt on Obama.
Dog, you are so right.
They are way too cowardly to put themselves out there for a vote.
Are you under the impression that any of them ARE NOT pussies?
If we pull off a "Shock n' Awe" in the Sadr Slum neighborhood, we can probably show gratifying results before the wusses in Congress can have any effect.
Unless they can get 9 or more Republicans to jump ship...they can't do sh*t.
Mr. McConnell can afford to have 8 Republicans cross the aisle and still prevent the Libtards from doing anything to damage our efforts in Iraq.
Sad what Norm Coleman has turned into.
I'm not seeing anything in print yet .. but they reported that Gates is to increase the number of active duty that could be called up
It will be announce tomorrow
"Pay any price," has deteriorated to "State any lies."
Durbin is a pig that fell over the cliff with all the demons that entered his body. We should send Pelosi and her new 200 year gavel over to Iraq and she just might knock out all the terrorists for our troops.
She's with POTUS!
I thought Brownback was a "conservative" white knight. Maybe he is positioning himself to pick up the anti Iraq war vote in the GOP primaries now. Politicians can be just so interesting.
"Even Trent Lott does not count as a cross over."
Please don't tell me Trent Lott has come out against the plan? Just got back to the board after watching the speech. I thought it was honest and foreboding. My prayers and support are still with our President and our troops on the ground!!
No wonder he is weary...trying to win a war his enemies are trying their best to lose.
You're getting warm.
Jim Inhofe from OK I bet will be helping lead the charge. He is definitely no shrinking violet!
You know, I like you personally, despite being warned off you many, many times, but you have become far too much of a disruptor on this site.
You just do not fit here anymore.
