There is a huge difference between discipline and abuse. They should not be confused.

And I thought ours was the only house to use that reason at the dinner table!
With my mother it was: "You'll be able to dine with the Queen of England."
"Now I'm blind."
Well, we all know what causes that. But Rosie?
Well, you know what they say about preacher's kids!
maybe or they don't want to end up in jail for spanking the kid
No I don't. Why don't you tell me?/sarc
I've heard that one before. I was the good child that never got into trouble. The word "guilt" is inscribed on the inside of my eyelids. If I wasn't within eyesight of my parents, I always knew God was watching me.
If there is anything lamer than a spell-check nazi (except of course John Edwards) I don't know what it is.
Pssst: Condoleezza Rice is Pro-abortion. Pass it on.
ZING!
I was raised exactly the same. My father died when I was 24 and I'm now 53 and I still feel those eyes on me! That and my other Father.
Yup. The same look that my wife gives me more times that I'd like to admit.
What works for one not always works for another but...
My folks used a merit/demerit system that worked most of the time.
Chores were assigned to be done at specific times.
Chores done on time got full 100% rating with a loss of 10% per hour for delay. Chores not done at all got no points.
All chores completed on time for the whole week got matching points which doubled the weeks standard allowance.
In other words there was a base allowance which would be paid if the chores got done, even late. But it could be forfeited entirely if no chores were done at all but double the base allowance if all chores were done on time.
No allowance effectively grounds most kids who have no money to go out and do things. I can't remember a time when the chores didn't get done, even if late.
This discipline bled over to all aspects of our behavior.
I had chores every day after homework. The usual, vacuum, dust, take out the trash and change the litterbox. Fun stuff. Another reason I never got into trouble.
A parental fear of consistancy.
Disipline doesn't have to be brutal or mean. Just well thought out, appropriate, and above all, consistent.
This "study" is worthless. As are most so called studies of this nature.
I think my mother obliterated a small forest, wiping out an entire indigenous population with all the wooden spoons she broke over my ass.
You left out one factor. Child Protective Services. In Washington state, they can do as they damn well please with no internal restraints. They are a bunch of liberal social workers who have either raised loser kids of their own or have none at all.
Their philosophy is simple. If a kid badmouths their parents they are telling the truth. If they won't they are either being coerced by their parents or brainwashed. If the child says anything bad about CPS or their allies in the public schools the kid is a liar.
Yes. It can be pretty scary.
And it filters down through the schools. Kids are told to report their parents.
To this day, I can't cuss in front of my mother.
That's it! My mother had it down too. Dang, someone should bottle it.
Sounds like you went to the same school that I did.
