Bush Judicial Nominees Withdraw

WASHINGTON (AP) --

In a concession to the Senate's new Democratic majority, four of President Bush's appeals court appointees have asked to have their nominations withdrawn, Republican officials said Tuesday.

These officials said that William Haynes, William Myers and Terrence Boyle had all decided to abandon their quest for confirmation. Another nominee, Mike Wallace, let it be known last month that he, too, had asked Bush to withdraw his nomination.

This should be all out war. The Senate wants to deny these nominees an up or down vote, then shut down the entire legislative process with the veto pen. No good legislation is going to come out of there now anyhow.

Republicans in my neck of the woods lost in November because the center abandoned Republicans due to the War and Immigration. Our republican turnout was as large and loyal as it had been since 1994.

I guess you failed to notice where voter percentages, across gender and ethnicity, shifted to the Dems.

The GOP failed to give a good reason to the average swing voter as to why they should stay in power. They stressed how important it was they maintained control - after showing they mostly saw power as a way to get the lion's share of earmarks and pork. That resonated with a lot of voters.

So if you want to blame someone, blame the pork-eating pubbies. Don't blame the voters. Blaming the voters is like a rapist blaming the victim for dressing in a way that "deserved" rape.

The continuing denial of the GOP loyalists is stunning.

The GOP should ditch the elephant and adapt Han Solo as their mascot - "It's not my fault!"

Sorry, but it wasn't the fault of voters that the GOP slapped earmarks on appropriations bills for the Iraq War and out Democrated the Democrats on spending over the last six years.

It wasn't the fault of voters that the GOP cavorted with K-street.

It wasn't the fault of voters that Hastert was utterly clueless for dealing with corruption, including his insane protests of the FBI raid of Jefferson's office.

It wasn't the fault of the voters that the GOP abandoned just about every stated principle from the Reagan revolution and the 1994 revolution.

So if you want to properly affix blame, look within the party leadership. Unless, of course, you're content with having the GOP slide back into perpetual minority status.

In terms of how groups voted, there were slight, but very significant changes from 2002 to 2006 that spelled disaster for the GOP.

• More Republicans voted for Democrats (9 percent), than Democrats voted for Republicans (6 percent).

• More conservatives voted for Democrats (21 percent), than liberals voted for Republicans (10 percent).

• Nearly 30 percent (29 percent) of White Evangelicals voted for Democrats, and 54 percent of those who attend church weekly voted for Democrats.

• Among voters who thought that the scandals were "extremely important," 53 percent voted Democrat.

As anyone here on FR can see, while there was a small drop of conservatives that turned out to vote (a 2% drop), there was a 4% INCREASE in liberal voters.

Those 2% of conservatives who did not vote are the stay at home, protest non-voters. 2% could easily have swung a number of states. It appears that more liberal voters realized how important these mid-terms were than conservative voters.

We get the politicians we deserve by our voting (or non-voting) actions.

All or nothing? We asked for a couple of things - cut spending and enforce the laws on immigration. Instead we had runaway spending and a Homeland Security chief who is so clueless that he is slapping passport requirements on citizens while admitting his department cannot keep track of visa holders who have left the country - and it was visa overstayers who were a large contingent of the 9-11 hijackers.

Perhaps if the GOP loyalists had done more to help hold the GOP accountable, swing voters might have been more inclinded to vote for the GOP. Instead, they properly caught the stench of political hypocrisy from the GOP like the aroma from a New Jersey swamp.
