Tell me about the '60s (vanity)

Posted on 01/09/2007 9:18:52 AM PST by HungarianGypsy

I am wanting to write a story based on a young adult in the 1960s. Since I was born in 1973 all I really know is what I studied in books. But, I want to get beyond love beads and LSD. I want to be able to write this as it really was. I know it's said if you remember the '60s you weren't really there. But, if anyone does remember I would appreciate reading your stories and facts. Thank you.

THUD! I also loved him in The Thornbirds! Couldn't believe it when I found out that he was gay.

That is when the drug culture was begun by the anti-war protesters. Today our elementary kids are even taking drugs.

I don't know about that. My dad smoked pot in his teens. Born (1917) and raised in the Bronx. It was everywhere he said, seems he also said it was legal but can not recall for sure.

Orleans and Nauset Beach for us. Had friends we'd visit in Chatham a lot.

I guess we could say that in the 60's P-town was a decent place for the family to visit.

I have read most of the 500 posts and this subject has not come up.

For a fun research reference, check out the flick American Graffiti. It is California in 1962. I would suggest watching several times, once to learn the story line and the characters and then other times to study the individual characters. They are very well done and provide a very good cross section of the times.

Although not all of the film applies to us living back east, it does provide a very distinctive flavor for the era with out the exaggeration so typical of Hollywood.

Pay attention also to the end and the epilogue. Also pay close attention to the continuous music. The music defines the early 60's.

Note also, this was the first effort of the great George Lucas. Most of the actors went on to stardom and even super stardom. After digesting the thousands of words on this thread, get thee to the vidio store and relax and enjoy.....take notes.

Listening to "Soldier Boy" on the am radio...

I was going to post that for you, but I can't seem to find that one. The closest I could find was this. If it brings back memories of your youth, I'd like to know your secret to a long life. ; )

Peerless Quartet - Au Revoir But Not Goodbye Soldier Boy.mp3

Thank you for your service.

You're right on both counts. It was the start of an ugly time in many respects.

The 60s were the time when America was the land of 1,000 dances (talk about diversity!) Now what? The land of 12 million illegals?

You're right. I messed up my HTML typing too.

I was trying to get from your bikinis to Beany & Cecil (1960s) and the No Bikini Atoll.

Just messed it all up.

"All eat dinner together"
In Texas, "Dinner" was still "Supper" and "Dinner" was the noon meal. It still is in small towns and rural areas and many still use those terms in the larger cities.

I was high school class of '76 too, I had a'64 Ford Fairlane, 3 on the tree... spent most of the time working on it, but in those days I could do it.

We were pretty poor, but it seems like pretty good times anyway.

You're right about drugs and such in the early 60s. The early 60's were basically an extenion of the late 50's with 1965 and '66 being transition years.
I feel like the Eras should be 1945 - 1955 and 1956 to 1964 or '65 or even '66. then 1967 to 1979.
