BILLINGS (AP) A Butte-based coalition is predicting farmers in Montana, Wyoming and Colorado are on their way to getting paid for conservation practices such as no-till farming that keep carbon dioxide in the ground Ted Dodge of the National Carbon Offset Coalition believes the Chicago Climate Exchange will soon allow farmers in the three states to bundle their carbon credits for sale. The private agency trades greenhouse gases and pollutants much like other exchanges trade commodities.
A spokesman for the Chicago Climate Exchange was out of the office Friday and did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
Supporters of the plan say its a way to reward farmers who want to help cut down on global warming.
The practice will set the stage for the day when the United States places a cap on carbon dioxide emissions and more corporations seek ways to buy credits to offset emissions, Dodge said.
Were trying to get ahead of the curve, he said. We think its going to be the largest commodity market in the world when it takes off.
So far, about 20 Montana farmers have shown an interest in the program, Dodge said.
Most are wheat farmers who already are planting crops without tilling the soil, which can be more labor-intensive and sometimes involves cutting slots in the field and dropping in seeds.
Many of them are doing this from a conservation standpoint, but now theres an opportunity for some remuneration for it, said Jane Holzer, director of the Montana Salinity Control Program in Conrad, who has been helping farmers sign up for carbon trading.
Obstacles include relatively low and fluctuating prices, and the fact that describing exactly what a carbon credit is a unit equal to 1 metric ton of carbon can seem a little abstract.
Holzer estimated that, under current prices, a farmer could get $250 to $350 a year for 100 acres that meet carbon sequestration standards.
Its not big money, but its $250 you didnt have if you didnt sign up, Holzer said.
More than 200 corporations, cities and other entities buy carbon credits at Chicago Climate Exchange, which has been operating since 2003. Most use the credits to offset emissions in countries operating under the Kyoto Protocol, which set mandatory limits on carbon dioxide.
Dodge and the Butte-based coalition, which is made up of seven Montana non-profits, are organizing interested farmers and hoping to aggregate their carbon credits and sell them in bulk.
What a joke.
Lets get really creative. How many ways can we find to give farmers presents. How about $10,000 silo bonus. Why only give them money when it's too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry. How about "Everthing's Just Right" insurance?
I'm thinking the Chicago Climate Exchange should least pay me a couple hundred dollars a week.
...for not mowing my grass.
If any Christian freeper here is also a Wikipedian, would you look at this Operation Auca Wikipedia article, and help the primary author on the discussion page? Two apparent atheist/unChristians have extreme views, including a German who is attempting to explain nuances in the English language to the (apparently) American author.
Not a Wikipedian, only a Wookieepedian (and other Wikia), and they take the IP address.
this is how the Dems "pay off" another constituency. in the meantime, US industry moves to china where they won't face having to buy these stupid "credits". who will buy them you ask? we will be forced to, if you want to buy a car/SUV that gets below a certain MPG - you'll have to buy one of these credits if the left gets its way.
As for the private carbon exchange in Chicago, it's not well publicized. I can't see why foreign nations would buy American carbon credits unless the trading partners are the same companies and interests trying to launder money into the United States, or avoid some tax. Perhaps overseas earnings can be taken more cheaply into the USA if they are laundered as a Carbon Credit??

LMFAO
Three card monte dealers with delusions of grandeur.

Everyone with a lawn should be able to get a check also. And something for every tree that we have in our yard...
Carbon dioxide is an important plant nutrient (really), so it may be just a little silly to be talking about sequestering it from the atmosphere. If that is the objective, there are easier way to take the fraction of CO2 out of the air than some complicated scheme involving subsidies and compliance with dictated guidelines.
Carbon dioxide is an important industrial compound, used for a number of processes and as a feedstock for other product synthesis. Simply cooling air down to -109.3 °F or -78.5 °C causes CO2 to fall out of the air like snow, and in fact, it is called "dry ice". Pressurization causes the CO2 to condense as a liquid at about 5.1 atm, (about 75 lbs/square inch). Carbon dioxide forms a clear liquid, much like water, and releasing it from pressure causes a great uptake of heat, enough so that it is used to put out fires of electrical origin. Plus all the oxygen is driven away from the fire.
Its absurd.
How much crap is enough?
Where will the line FINALLY get drawn?
By whom?
And how will they make it STICK?
Until that is known, everything else is just jaw jackin'.
Won;'t be long before they start fining farmers for tilling- the huge cash cow known as global warming begins to rear it;'s ugly head.

Something I just learned today
from a local radio station.
The idea of "carbon credits" is not new.
Apparently it was tried earlier
with phosphorous
in order to reduce pollution.
I don't know if Maurice Strong was involved
I don't have more details
perhaps someone else does
but anyway
the plan failed miserably.
btw I hear Maurice
along with Jean
(the guy who brought Kyoto to Canada)
currently are spending a lot of time in China.
(To assess the human rights situation
no doubt)
Ping
Wait until you have to buy exhale credits for having a certain number of people in your family.
Why is Maurice still walking around? Did his investigation just fade away?
I'm shocked.
Not really.
