The "dirty dozen" list of "America's Most Bizarre and Politically Correct College Courses" is out and Los Angeles-area institutions of higher learning have walked away with one-fourth of the ranked honors (or dishonors). Occidental College, an 1,800-student liberal arts school in Eagle Rock, is the only college on the list to collect not one but two citations for excellence at offering trendy theories of gender, skin color and white-male oppression at the expense of actual academic content.
UCLA didn't fare badly either, with one citation. And believe me, the competition was stiff. The Southern California colleges were competing against such nationally recognized PC heavyweights as Cornell, Amherst, the University of Michigan and, of course, Duke.
The list comes from the Young America's Foundation, a 40-year-old nonprofit funded by conservative individuals and foundations. Its No. 1 slot this year for bizarre class offerings went to Occidental, for a course called "The Phallus."
No, it's not a biology course. It's a survey, offered by Oxy's department of critical theory and social justice, of "feminist and queer takings-on of the phallus." Topics include "the relation between the phallus and the penis, the meaning of the phallus, phallologocentrism, the lesbian phallus, the Jewish phallus, the Latino phallus, and the relation of the phallus and fetishism."
You might wonder how a lesbian can have a phallus, or whether it's possible to say "phallologocentrism" three times without tripping on your tongue, but if so, it's likely that you won't be getting an "A" from Occidental professor Jeffrey Tobin, who is teaching the course this spring semester.

Does anybody actually know a person who has taken such a worthless class? Would you let your kids enroll in such worthless classes?
A class where taking an oral exam and passing it successfully first time makes you a stand-out.
It was at this point that I got lost.
This is the dumbing down of our schools by the liberals. Occidental one of the colleges named has really taken a nose dive over the years. The libs have really driven it down hill.
Kinda off-topic---or reverse topic, but ever since I read The DaVinci Code I can't look at church doors without thinking of Georgia O'Keefe.
Words fail.
I met a girl from Occidental that took that course.
She said that the American Indian had the largest penis, and the American Jew had the hardest. I introduced my self as Tonto Goldfarb.
No amateurs, please. Send FReepmail if you want on/off ISHP list |

The List of Ping Lists |
...but I am a fungii to be with.
I hear ya..
See Roman Empire, the chapter on demise thereof same
Occidental College is in Eagle Rock, CA (very near the Rose Bowl)...when I was graduating from high school in 1965 it was a "to die for" school to get into....arguably the west coast's most prestigious college.
Times have changed...
Possible ping.
Need to quit sleeping.
Sadly, this will soon change.
Groan....you're on the morning flight back to Greenland. Sorry, bub.
thats teh hawt !!
The post-blackness course must be about Michael Jackson. That'd fit with queer musicology, too.
Back in the 80s I had to take an "education" core class as a music education major at Washington State Univ. It was taught by a complete left wing ding bat, and the curriculum was P.C. garbage like how using masculine pronouns in gender neutral situations was destructive to female egos.
I was much more "liberal" then (i.e. more ignorant). The course was an eye opener and pushed me in in the opposite direction. I changed majors from music-ed to math in part because I could not stomach more such coarse work (and now make a lot more money then I would have as a teacher).
Outstanding.
Occidental won the competition for a course named "The Phallus"...
And in paragraph 2, Ms. Allen (the writer), asserts: "And believe me, the competition was stiff".
Things that make you go hmmmmm.
I took two such courses in college.
One was called Race, Class, and Gender, where I learned that crack babies are actually the result of the father's cocaine-tainted sperm, and not the mother's own drug use.
Another class was Hollywood, Gays, and the Culture War, which was actually rather interesting. The (gay) professor of that course sounded a lot like some Freepers when he condemned militant homosexual activists for obstructing public health efforts to curb the spread of AIDS.
Both courses were selected partly to satisfy degree requirements, and partly to satisfy my curiosity. After several semesters of wholesome economics and political science courses, I wanted to experience some of the academic P.C. madness I had read so much about.
Would you let your kids enroll in such worthless classes?
Well, considering that most college students are adults, I really don't see how their parents would have any say in the matter. Unless these "adults" were letting mommy and daddy foot the bill, of course :)
It was at this point that I got lost.
They buy them mail order.
