METAIRIE -- The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office identified one of the men responsible for stealing more than hundred guns from a sporting goods shop on New Year’s Day.
Deputies said Saturday they wanted the public’s help in locating the suspect, 28-year-old Jermaine Surtain, who’s wanted on burglary charges.
According to authorities, Surtain and possibly three other suspects broke into Puglia's Sporting Goods store on Veterans Boulevard and stole 115 assorted make, model and caliber handguns, along with four shotguns and two assault rifles.
Throughout the course of the investigation, sheriff’s deputies were able to retrieve one of the stolen guns, Lt. Newell Normand, a sheriff’s office spokesman, said. They also recovered the Dodge Durango that Surtain rented and allegedly used in the burglary.
Normand said police were still looking for a person of interest: a man who rented the vehicle that Surtain was driving, a 2007 Jeep Commander. That vehicle was returned a few hours ago.
Normand said Surtain is considered armed and dangerous and authorities believe he’s selling the stolen weapons on the streets.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the ATF, Gretna Police and other local agencies were able to link Surtain to the crime after receiving information from another suspect that was arrested yesterday on an unrelated matter.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about this case to please call Crimestoppers at 822-1111. There is currently a $10,000 reward out for information leading to Surtain’s arrest.
