RUDY'S TRAITORS - "Leaker" Aids to Gov. He Helped
NY Post ^ | 1/3/07

Suspicion ran high yesterday that Rudy Giuliani's lost White House campaign playbook was swiped by aides to Florida's new governor - while the ex-mayor was helping him win election, sources told The Post.

Giuliani's aides were tightlipped about how it disappeared, but said it happened during a private plane ride on the campaign trail for 2006 candidates. They included Florida Gov. Charles Crist.

"During one leg of his campaign travel, all luggage was removed from a private plane and later put back on," said Giuliani's spokeswoman, Sunny Mindel.

"However, one staffer's bag was not returned. After repeated requests over the course of a few days, the bag was finally returned with the document inside.

"Because our staffer had custody of this document at all times except for this one occasion, it is clear that the document was removed from the luggage and photocopied," she added, stopping short of saying it was stolen.

"Voters are sick and tired of dirty tricks. They are interested in substantive issues and want leaders like Rudy who are as well," Mindel said.

But operatives outside Giuliani's camp said the book was taken during a campaign swing for Crist - a Republican, like Giuliani - whose inauguration to replace Jeb Bush as Florida's governor took place yesterday.

Crist's aides didn't return calls for comment.

Damn, who to believe.

Is this really that damning for Rudy, above what he's already done to himself with his anti-gun and pro-infanticide stance?

Okay, now this is starting to really smell bad. Why would luggage be removed from a private plane at all?

Actually It's not damning at all to Rudy. But it's still a mystery.

Thanks. I wasn't sure how it could affect anything other than giving away some plans for fundraising. Except for how it was leaked, it really is a non-issue, correct?

The evolving story seems to change each time we read an account. I think someone is in "CYA mode", now they are just saying that the book "had been" in the aide's possession at all times EXCEPT during that period. Did that aide tip someone off what was in that bag? Suddenly they are not saying it was outright theft.

Well it's just campaign strategy - which can be changed and probably would have been anyway but the problem is there is someone who is irresponsible here and/or someone decided to do this purposely and he/she needs to be exposed before this happens again. Every candidate needs to carefully screen their people.

Who knows. Maybe Rudy smelled a mole and the thing was a setup. His thing is "security". How do you catch a rat?? With a rat trap!

For the political class around here - the people who are more concerned about (R) victories than the policies that are implemented following them - this is a bigger disaster than Rudy being elected and signing a gay marriage bill.

Don't know who took the document but someone got paid to do it and the document sounds like it was the work of the staffer. I would be looking at the staffer as a mole for someone. How did someone know to take that particular bag?

The Clintonites have been shadowing Rudy all year along with some from the other camps like McCain and Romney. The Crist campaign would have had absolutely no reason to take that document, but those other campaigns that followed Rudy around would IMHO. Money talks in politics.

Still betting you will find a Clintonite at the bottom of all of this. This is what they do best -- put the blame on Republicans after they get them to do the dirty work by leaking to them. McCain knew what was coming on the DUI before it was released according to sources and almost used it in SC. Look what he did with push polling in SC in 2000 -- blamed Pres Bush when it was his camp. How come dirty tricks don't happen to McCain? IMO it is because he is in the same camp as the Clintonites -- win at any cost.

The game is afoot as Holmes said to Watson.

If you read Giuliani's book "Leadership" he mentions how he decided to support W over McCain in 2000. That he thought W was a more impressive leader, had a better track record(particularly with education in TX), and had a much better shot to beat Gore.

He goes on to say that McCain was none too pleased at his decision and reminded him of it on occasion.

Who knows what happened here? But Rudy was a prosecutor with experience investigating the mob. He knows plenty of NYPD guys and PI's. If anyone can get to the bottom of this he can.

If it should come out that a McCain operative was involved or if some random maintenance worker swiped it and offered it to a McCain operative who accepted it, would that hurt McCain?

If he's seen as being involved with something like this, especially after his SC 2000 experience, it could seriously hamper him.

The plot thickens...
