Ortega Returns to Power in Nicaragua

MANAGUA, Nicaragua -- Former revolutionary Daniel Ortega takes office Wednesday in a ceremony attended by more than a dozen world leaders, many Latin American leftists celebrating their latest ally in the region.

Ortega has promised a delicate balance between taking a moderate economic and social stance while cultivating close relationships with U.S. opponents such as Venezuelan Hugo Chavez and the communist Cuban government. Ortega was once one of the most bitter foes of Washington, which secretly backed a rebel insurgency aimed at toppling him.

Chavez, who has called President Bush the "devil," is using his inaugural visit to play up his support of Nicaragua, promising the impoverished nation 32 desperately needed electricity plants, low-interest loans to the poor from a branch of his state development bank and help in improving the country's health and education systems.

Another guest attending will be Bolivian President Evo Morales, a close ally of Chavez and ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Morales has expressed doubts about the U.S. drug war efforts in the Andean region and recently announced that U.S. citizens would need visas to visit Bolivia. The U.S. is wary of Morales' ties to Chavez and Castro.(snip)

French officials have arrested two Serbs on suspicions of having imported explosives to France, a judicial source said on Tuesday. Officials found four kilograms of the powerful explosive pentrite in northern Paris, the source said.

Police suspected the men of wanting to sell the material to members of organised crime groups. One of the suspects was a bus driver regularly driving from Belgrade to Paris, the source said.

Security scare at suburban hospital (Chicago)
January 9, 2007

Police are investigating a security scare at south suburban hospital. A man wearing a white lab coat and stethoscope apparently followed an employee of Advocate South Suburban Hospital into the building in Hazel Crest Tuesday morning.

An alert nurse spotted him and asked him for an ID. Security was called, but the man managed to escape. While the man was trying to get away in his car he hit and injured a security guard. He will be okay.

Hospital officials say their security procedures worked and that the man never got close to any patients.

Good question Cindy, I hadn't thought of Canada.

Oorang's thoughts on article below - Either this guy was really stupid or was up to something. Both ammonia and bleach could be readily purchased at his destination but he took them both on the airplane. Combine bleach and ammonia, breathe the fumes, and you're dead.

Chemical Found in Passenger's Baggage (Jackson, Mississippi)
01/09/07

There was a scare at Jackson-Evers International Airport Tuesday when screeners found a chemical in some baggage. Emergency crews were called in to investigate. A passenger apparently needed the chemicals for his job and put them inside his checked baggage.

Officials say a passenger told them the substance was "water treatment chemicals." Sources tell us the chemicals were ammonia and bleach which becomes hydrochloric acid when combined.

Three Transportation Security Administration employees were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure after complaining of breathing problems. No flights were affected and no charges are expected to be filed against the passenger.
