WASHINGTON — Gerald R. Ford leaves his beloved U.S. Capitol for the last time Tuesday as the period set aside for ordinary Americans to say goodbye gives way to an elaborate invitation-only funeral at the awe-inspiring Washington National Cathedral.

As the first order of business Tuesday, Ford's remains were being removed from the Rotunda to lie in repose briefly outside the Senate before leaving the Capitol where Ford served as a congressman for 25 years. As vice president, Ford also had the constitutional title of president of the Senate.

How beautiful the Cathedral is. That stained glass window is breathtaking - I haven't been there since I was in high school. Would like to go visit again.

Hymn: "For All the Saints". GREAT hymn!

I'm loving all the old hymns! It's a trip down memory lane for me as my church has made the transition to contemporary music. I like the new music, too, but the hymns just hold a special place in my heart.

"Co-opting the press"? I really don't think it came, or would come, to that. Ford and Brokaw worked together on the WWII memorial. Isn't it possible that he liked the guy, even if you didn't?

Had to listen to Steven Botchko attack Jesse Helms at my son's graduation. It was 100 degrees under that tent and I thought I was going to hurl my bottle of water at him.

Heard John Edwards at a graduation last year and he was ranting about how America should be feeding India's poor. The students were nearly comatose with boredom.

President Bush does not need the hymnal or program for this one.

I love all the "Chritianness". Sad it takes a funeral to
openly display our Christian nature...our Christian nation.

Different time zones. I fixed some breakfast. These are gorgeous stained glass windows in the cathedral.

Superb music and beautiful liturgy that one sour note could not spoil. But I agree with you.

"Any shots of Clintoon sleeping or biting his lower lip in reflection of President Ford's life?"

Didn't Bubba fall asleep at Reagan's? Wasn't Hillary caught looking bored?

He shouldn't; his parents raised him Episcopalian. He didn't go "low-church" Protestant until his marriage.

For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
Who Thee by faith before the world confessed,
Thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might;
Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight;
Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

For the Apostles’ glorious company,
Who bearing forth the Cross o’er land and sea,
Shook all the mighty world, we sing to Thee:
Alleluia, Alleluia!

For the Evangelists, by whose blest word,
Like fourfold streams, the garden of the Lord,
Is fair and fruitful, be Thy Name adored.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

There are quite a few verses. All of them are here: http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/f/a/fallthes.htm

"For All the Saints" is one of my favorite hymns which I just learned since becoming a Catholic. It is beautiful!

You have truly embraced our Catholic faith. "I" do not know the words by heart... do you, Mo? :)

I don't think they should do close-ups of Betty Ford and the family. Not necessary -- let the family grieve without a TV camera.

It breaks me up to because he was her Rock of Gibralter in every way. It has to be so hard for her right now to go through all of this in public.

To all the saints... snif.

The Navy Hymn just makes me break down every time. Eternal rest grant unto him. Prayers for Betty and the family.

That hymn is definitely not part of their tradition, which I think is Baptist for both of them.

New music can be good as well. But I love the traditional Catholic and now I see Episcopalian hymns. It's the same I think! Cool!
