Fairness for Lewinsky
Washington Post ^ | 2 January 2007 | Richard Cohen

Posted on 01/02/2007 5:18:23 AM PST by shrinkermd

...She is a branded woman, not an adulterer but something even worse -- a girl toy, a trivial thing, a punch line. Yet she did what so many women at that age would do. She seduced (or so she thought) an older man. She fantasized that he would leave his wife for her. Here was her crime: She was a girl besotted. It happens even to Republicans.

But she is now a woman with a master's degree from a prestigious school and is going to be 34 come July. Her clock ticks, her life ebbs. Where is the man for her? Where is the guy brave enough, strong enough, admirable enough to take her as his wife, to suffer the slings and arrows of her outrageous fortune -- to say to the world (for it would be the entire world) that he loves this woman who will always be an asterisk in American history. I hope there is such a guy out there. It would be nice. It would be fair.

It would be nice, too, and fair, also, if Lewinsky were treated by the media as it would treat a man....

This is the year 2007, brand new and full of promise. It would be nice if my colleagues in the media would resolve to treat Monica Lewinsky as a lady, to think of her as they would themselves, to remember their own youth and the things they did and to understand that from this day forward anyone who takes a cheap shot at Lewinsky has a moral and professional obligation to look in the mirror. To proceed otherwise is to miss the joke entirely. No longer is it Monica Lewinsky. It is now the people who write about her.

I am shocked at the number of stones that have been used on this thread. Someone will have to collect some more.

She is no worse than Parris Hilton, Britney Spears,or a host of other Hollywood sluts

My puberty was concurrent with the early career of the first Hollywood Wildchild

Still think Tuesday had more class and talent than the current crop

Well then by rights, Monica should now have a talk show, her own magazine, do home shopping. And those hens at the View must let her be guest host. If she is so smart, let's give her Katie's newscast, too.

If Cohen's simply trying to find the girl a husband, he could write her a nice catchy bio on match.com and call it a day.

Now, will someone please explain how all this helps his gal Hill and erases Monicagate?

"Everybody does it" is part of the lie that wrecks lives and creates fields of bodies for nobodies like Cohen to crawl over on their way to claiming to be part of the self-appointed elite. It is part of leftist ideology that they have to push aside Doctor's daughters to get ahead.

My daughter is about Monica's age and I thought her comment was interesting. She said she knew that I would have handled the sperm on dress news very differently than Mrs Lewinsky did. First burn the dress, then get you out of town was her take. A CA friend says Mrs Lewinsky claimed to have slept with all three tenors. For some, notoriety is better than obscurity.

Morrissey's take from the Captain's Quarters Blog

"Post Vs Post

It's not often that a newspaper columnist uses his platform to attack the news division at his own paper, but Richard Cohen uses his first appearance of the year to do just that. Without naming the reporter, Cohen blasts the Post for its insulting and capricious coverage of Monica Lewinsky's master's degree from the London School of Economics:

In the various books I've read about the Bill Clinton impeachment scandal -- a scandal because of what was done and a scandal because the president was impeached for it -- the same story is told over and over again. When the prosecutors or lawyers or whoever finally got to meet the storied Monica Lewinsky, they were floored by her. She was smart, personable and -- as the record makes clear -- dignified. This is more than can be said about some of the people who write about her.

I will not name names. But in recent days, Lewinsky has been back in the news. In December she graduated with a master's degree in social psychology from the London School of Economics. Her thesis was titled "In Search of the Impartial Juror: An Exploration of the Third Person Effect and Pre-Trial Publicity." Her thesis might well have been called "In Search of the Impartial Journalist," because she was immediately the subject of more poke-in-the-ribs stories about you know what. The Post, a better paper than it was that day, called her "dumb-but-smart." It was more than could be said for that piece.

It does not take a Freudian to appreciate why Lewinsky chose the topic she did. She is a victim of publicity, and her life has been a trial -- enough to floor almost anyone. But in Lewinsky's case, she took a bad situation and made something good of it. That hardly makes her "dumb-but-smart," but rather once young -- and now older and incomparably wiser. An approximation of this befalls us all, but before we got to become wise and prudent in all things we were probably irresponsible, outrageous and wild -- in other words, young.

Perhaps Cohen doesn't want to name names, but I covered this when it first appeared on Christmas Eve. Libby Copeland wrote the piece that raised Cohen's ire, and he is absolutely correct in his disgust. Here's Copeland's sneering, condescending take on Monica 2006:

Lewinsky, 33, is known more for her audacious coquetry than for her intellectual heft, and the notion of her earning a master of science degree in social psychology at the prestigious London university is jarring, akin to finding a rip in the time-space continuum, or discovering that Kim Jong Il is a natural blond. Even more staggering, the same bubbly gal who once described the act of flashing her thong at the president as a "small, subtle, flirtatious gesture" has now written a lofty-sounding thesis. Its title, according to Reuters: "In Search of the Impartial Juror: An Exploration of the Third Person Effect and Pre-Trial Publicity."

Monica! We hardly knew ye!

A revelation on this order suggests Lewinsky belongs to a fascinating subspecies, dumb-but-smart. Dumb-but-smart folks defy our low expectations. They appear dull or ditzy but possess unpredictable pockets of intelligence.

I wrote at the time that Copeland had embarrassed the Post much more than Lewinsky in her snide and snooty article. Now even the Post's own house columnist has taken Copeland to the woodshed, although Cohen for some reason feels the need to refrain from reporting the name of the reporter. Instead, he aims at the entire profession about Monica's treatment at their hands, which may have some truth to it. It seems a little like overkill to blame the entire profession and not name the specific violators, and it shows that professional courtesy can sometimes lead even the most well-intentioned into unnecessary hyperbole. (It's not the only hyperbolic part of the piece; the passage where he keens over Monica's love life is particularly hilarious.)

Kudos, though, to Cohen for calling this one straight, and to the shame-faced Post for allowing this unusual version of self-criticism to appear on its pages today.

Thank you for mentioning his slam at Judge Starr. Notice that he doesn't take any shots at the Sink Emperor. Cohen always will be a flaming lib.

Maybe it was a political favor like the high paying job she got during the trial from one of Bubba's friends.

Bill Clinton received oral gratification on his genitals while discussing troop deployment on the phone. This shows the lack of respect he had for the men in service. It also shows the lack of regard he had for national security secrets.

real quick..
1. monica was /is a skank - brought up by loser parents-
read any of their comments on anything.

2. The only reason she is in the news is to take the
sheeples eyes off of bill clinton -in court lying-
falsifying court papers- commiting purjury- and asking
others to commit purjury too.

3. bill was impeached - and monica is relegated to an
appendix note- but this is like a jerry springer show
will the skank do something else outrageous?
lets watch.

A bit melodramatic Cohen. Monica parlayed her 15 minutes of fame into some major bucks. She did not shy away from the public spotlight, but rather, basked in it. She wrote a book, Monica Speaks, and cooperated with Andrew Morton for another, Monica's Story. She was interviewed by Barbara Walters on national TV. She has been making the rounds of universities on speaking tours. She has capitalized on her fame, including appearing on SNL.

I have no sympathy for Monica. If there are aggrieved parties in the Clinton scandal, they are Ken Starr, Kathleen Willey, Linda Tripp, Juanita Broaddrick, Gennifer Flowers, and many others who had there reputations destroyed and incurred huge leagal expenses and did not have a sympathetic media to help them out.

Sorry. A "lady" doesn't get on her knees and get used as a receptacle for a married mans ejaculate, or as his cigar holder.

She will have to live with making Lewinsky an act, not a name.

I haven't read her thesis but it would seem from the title that she is blaming the media for running Bill Clinton's legal team's leaks rathar than owning up to her own attempts at lying about the affair under oath in a sexual harassment lawsuit which made workplace affairs a relevant topic.

It may be hard to get a "fair trial" when the defense is leaking material to the press so as to soften the blow/shocks but it is even harder to get a fair trial when the defense and witnesses conspire to lie under oath with bought off testimony and intimidation.
