Saddam execution: Your reaction What difference will Saddam's death make to people in Iraq?
Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has been hanged.
His sentence was carried out for the killings of 148 Shias in Dujail in the 1980s following a failed assassination attempt.
US troops and Iraqi security forces are on high alert for any violent backlash.
What is your reaction to the event? Do you think he should have been executed? Should he have faced other charges? How do you think news of his hanging will affect the violence in Iraq?
10 years too late
Well, it was done technically illiterately: it ought to have been done by the lower neck [i.e. by the appendages], using a broad somewhat elastic ribbon, and without any drop - just a "kinder and gentler" lowering.
"I for one am actually taken aback by the strength of the feeling here in the UK AGAINST the execution."
Really? I can't say I've met anyone who is especially against the execution of Saddam especially. More commonly the attitude is that it's entirely a matter for the Iraqi people. Of course there are those who are opposed to the death penalty as a principal, but thats not exactly the same thing...
My comment:
No wonder it took so long to get him there, they had
to count all the bodies first.
To the Guardianistas:
2006-12-30) The Pentagon announced this morning that a weapon of mass destruction (WMD) was found today in Baghdad, hanging from a rope on a platform.
This particular WMD, a Pentagon spokesman said, is known to have killed thousands of Iraqis, as well as Iranians, Kuwaitis and some U.S. troops.
The weapon is described as a nasty, corrosive agent which kills indiscriminately and without warning.
A lot of folks including Hans Blix, the United Nations and the Democrats said there were no WMD in Iraq, the Pentagon source said. Perhaps they were just looking in all the wrong places.
According to Iraqi government sources, the WMD has been contained, neutralized and prepared for burial.

Go to the site and read some of the reader's reactions!
Here's one that's typical: "How can Saddam Hussein be hanged while G.Bush roams around free. What right does Bush have to get Saddam Hussein hanged. Saddam Hussein was a Brave Man and that was evident from his last minutes. I respect him and salute him. There in no denying that he did wrong. But murders cannot be judges of his actions.

naaa... do it the Iranian way. LIFTED by the neck with a crane so they dance while they suffocate. the neck snap is much tooo quick AND kind.
OOOH! Here's one from over here!
The execution of Saddam is a barbaric act. Bush should be put on trial as well. Peaceful people of the world - we must continue to unite to stop this madness.

BWAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Nadeem gives us a sample of the twisted morality of the culture from which he has arisen. [Nadeem belongs at DU. He'd be right at home.]
After all the blood and money we spent freeing Iraq from Saddam, I want to witness it.
Just reading the first three pages of responses, the 'antis' seem to be not British but various third-world types, mainly Moslem. Also, some are Brit but anti-capital-punishment under any circumstances, and some are Brit but just incurably wet.
If anyone knows how to post this survey on an Iraqi website it might be worth doing. Give the folks most affected a shot at it.
Lived bad; died good. An emotional response to an action of the state is inappropriate.
Another:
I feel sadness that Sadam Hussain has been executed because I feel as though it is wrong to execute anybody, but if Tony Blair was hanged I think that I would feel contented.

But some of the comments are hilariously illiterate.
Yes, I thought that he was lucky not to end up like Mussolini.
Europeans generally are against the death penalty. Also, many Brits are against the war in Iraq. In addition, there is a small but growing number of Muslims in the UK (Mohammad being one of the top names for newborn boys there) and many of them think Saddam was a champion since he gave money to the PLO and hated the US. I'd say most of the press in the UK - the Guardian, The Mirror, and THE INDEPENDENT, for instance, would not be too pleased by Saddam's hanging.
And like Richard Clarke said: "If we go into Afghanistan, he'll just boogey on up to Iraq".
As hard as it is to see through the fog sometimes, Iraq was a must in this war on terror. We have eliminated a monster....as dangerous as Hitler.
