Bush could have led the tough on campaign but instead left us to assume he would veto it if it passed.
Bush was defeated last month, from now on it will be like watching a walking dead man.
Evidently the House Republicans think their position on immgration was detrimental. They removed Sensenbrenner from any position of authority.
I agree, illegal immigration costing the Repubs the majority is a myth, and our losses are trying to be spun into "you had better support amnesty or yo will lose to" nonsense.
I wasn't aware that Kondracke or Barnes ran for office for instance.
If I am mistaken J.D. Hayworth voted against HR4437 ( the house immigration bill )
I think Republicans were harmed because after six years in power, they had little to nothing to claim as immigration reform.
When you are given "power" by the voters, they expect it to be used wisely.
The voters want a better immigration system. They didn't get it. Hence, they throw out the bums that wasted six years, with plenty of earmarks, but no immigration reform.
(IOW many people aren't strongly "idealogical" about immigration. Yet they know it is broken, and they want a better system.)
And for the ones that ARE idealogical about immigration, the Republicans fail on that count; one house one way, the other house the other way.
All around, the Republicans were spanked for doing nothing.
Since you posted a Hawkins article from Human Events, you should read what he has to say about the Corsi and the NAU conspiracy nuts.
"Randy Graf, a tough on illegal immigration conservative, who was attempting to retain a seat held by Rep. Jim Kolbe, was torpedoed by the Republican Party."
Expect more of the same in '08. Look how it's already started here...Tancredo for instance...and next they will be attacking Duncan Hunter...the RNC with Martinez as the pointman, thanks to Bush, will be doing everything in its power to 'eliminate' candidates who want to secure our borders and enforce our current immigration laws.
Of course, if the OBL is successful in passing their CIR legislation anytime soon, promoting an anti-OBL candidate for '08, will be a mute point?

The demographics of our current legal immigration system must also be evaluated. Immigration by the Numbers We are taking in over a million legal immigrants a year, much of it through the chain migration policies implemented in 1965. Add to this number 500,000 to 1 million illegal, self-selected immigrants, mostly the poor and uneducated of Latin America. Based on census figures, we have 300 million Americans today, up from the 203 million in 1970, 249 million in 1990, and 281 million in 2000. By 2030, we will have 364 million and will top 400 million by 2050. As a matter of public policy, is this what we want?
When this country goes into a economic downturn, as it surely will as part of the regular cycle, the public will become more aware of the problem. The question is whether it is too late to do anything about it. We are like the frog sitting on the stove with the water being gradually heated and belatedly realizing that he is being boiled alive.
When I went to Santorum's Spanish website to check it out, these statements were patently false-- his Spanish website had the same content as his English website-- but Santorum never answered these ads.
Bttt!
Great article.
Thank you for putting the actual numbers on what I knew to be true, but didn't have the statistics to prove.
Do you think Karl Rove told POTUS the truth or are they in dreamland between what he is saying and knows to be true?
John McCain, too, is in denial and evidentally believes he is going to draw the Hispanic vote in the primaries next year.
Now, what happens to the GOP when they pass amnesty this year? Predictions?
