Spain: Cordoba Bishop Rejects Muslim Prayers In Cathedral

Cordoba, 28 Dec. (AKI) - The Bishop of the southern city of Cordoba, Juan Jose Asenjo, has turned down a request from its Muslim community to be allowed to pray with Christians in its cathedral - a former mosque. Asenjo was quoted as saying the joint use of consecrated places of worship would "generate confusion" and lead to "religious indifference". Asenjo also said that the Bishopric had valid legal documents entitling the Catholic Church to sole use of the building. Moreover, while Catholics are able to live in peace with other faiths, and the Cordoba Diocese wants to maintain its good relations with local Muslims, Cordoba's Christian roots should be respected, Asenjo argued.

Spain's Islamic Board, which represents a community of some 800,000 in a traditional Catholic country of 44 million, argued in a letter to Pope Benedict XVI that such a move in Cordoba could serve to "awaken the conscience" of followers of both faiths and help bury past confrontations.

The organisation stated that they were not aiming at re-establishing the Cordoba Mosque - now a Unesco world heritage site - nor reviving Andalusia, the pre-Christian Muslim civilisation of Spain, of which Cordoba was the capital. Rather, the demand should be seen as a move to encourage tolerance and reconciliation, the Islamic Board argued.

"What we wanted was not to take over that holy place, but to create in it, together with you and other faiths, an ecumenical space unique in the world which would have been of great significance in bringing peace to humanity," said its letter to the pontiff.

The Cordoba mosque was turned into a Catholic cathedral in the 13th Century after the city was conquered by King Ferdinand III in the war to drive the North African Moors from the Iberian peninsula.

What's allowed or done in a Catholic church is the business of the Catholics and NOBODY ELSE, especially someone of another religion.
Muzzies will find offense at anything for any reason.

Golly, why didn't they begin by volunteering their current place of worship as a venue for gestures of reconciliation?

If they want to play footsy-wootsy, they can provide the 'worship space'.

Hallelujah! Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

It looks like the Catholic Church will lead the Crusaders in their quest to save us from the cult of demon worshippers?

"Andalusia, the pre-Christian Muslim civilisation of Spain"

I had to chuckle at that. There are lies and DAMN LIES!! Spain had already been Christian for several hundred years prior to the moors invading .....

The Hagia Sophia is currently a museum. There are no prayer services either Islamic or Christian in it.

Hmm, That's very very curious. :/
What does the Bishop, think he' doing?....didn't Spain surrender (voted out their PM, withdrew) the Terrorist (lose the WOT), a few years ago?

Oh I see, take an inch now. It's only an inch right?
I've f*ck'n had it with Muslims, they are pagans worshiping Satan in disguise. To allow them to pray in any building conquered for, and consecrated to the true God is an abomination!

Hell, letting them pray anywhere is.

It might be appropriate here to point out that the mosque was built on the site of a church destroyed by the Muslims when they invaded Spain, and that the lamps that were in the mosque (now the Cathedral) were made from the bells of the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, which the Christian prisoners were forced to carry from Compostela to Cordoba on their way to their life of slavery there after the Muslims overran Santiago. But we wouldn't want to destroy the peaceful Muslim fantasy, would we.

"pre-Christian Muslim civilisation of Spain"

WTF?

Since Christianity is centuries older than islam, what kind of spin is this?

Spain had been predominantly "Arian Christian" prior to the Moslem invasion(s) (to be technically correct). Now you may or may not consider the Arians who ruled Spain to have been real Christians or not ~ last time I looked the Roman church didn't accept the legitimacy of their baptisms, but there may have been exceptions.

What I think we need here is someone who knows the details of Ecclesiastical and Theological history in Spain circa 350 to 750 to enable us to address this issue of whether or not Islam is pre-Christian, or post-Christian when it comes to Spain.

What the article fails to state was that the property was originally the site of the Church of St Vincent, which the Muzzies destroyed to build the mosque.

Spain had been predominantly "Arian Christian" prior to the Moslem invasion(s) (to be technically correct).

To be "technically correct" Spain had been largely Catholic with an Arian aristocracy (the Goths), who nevertheless eventually adopted the faith of their peasants (before the moors showed up). The Goths had been evangelized by Arians, but to what degree they were attached to the particular dogmas of Arianism is hard to say.

According to the latest demographic projections, Spain (and most of Europe) are toast within two generations. Spaniards don't make enough babies to replace themselves and only the Muzzies are doing so, big time. Check out "America Alone" by Mark Steyn for the facts. All too soon, the Muzzies will pray wherever they want in Europe. The Euridiots don't yet "get it," and Eurabia under Sharia law, is soon to be true.
