Duke Rape Case Has Become a Parody

Given recent events in Durham, N.C., concerning the alleged Duke University lacrosse "rape'' case, it is now possible to declare parody dead.

How does one parody a parody?

All is not lost, however. We can celebrate the addition of a new verb to our American lexicon -- "to Nifong.'' When the moment calls for activities that need no elaboration, we already "Bobbitt,'' "Bork,'' and "Lewinsky.''

Now we can "Nifong'' someone when we want to trump up criminal charges based on flimsy evidence allegedly for political purposes. In short, when we want to screw up someone's life.

Nifong would be as in Durham County District Attorney Michael B. Nifong, who earlier this year brought charges against three lacrosse players -- Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans -- for the alleged rape of an African-American stripper who had been hired to perform at a team party.

Last week, Nifong dropped the rape charges when the alleged victim decided she wasn't sure she had been raped after all. That is, she wasn't sure she had been vaginally penetrated, a distinction required by state law for a charge of rape.

Last March, after the party, the stripper had a different recollection, telling police that she had been raped every which way. But, well, these things are difficult sometimes to keep straight. Rape being so nuanced and all.

Meanwhile, hundreds of lives have been turned inside out, none so much as the three accused players. All because, well, let's see, because the stripper said so. The absence of corroborating evidence seemed to pose no obstacle for Nifong, who ran a successful re-election campaign on the strength of his convictions.

And, of course, the story had good legs and plenty of sex appeal, if you like that sort of thing: race...

How about Virginian-American?

I read that as "Vaginan American".

(Which we will start hearing next, I suppose.)

I always thought it funny that Ernie Els (white, South African golfer) is more African than Tiger Woods.

When filling out questionnaires or employment forms, he would inevitably fill in "African-American". He had reams of stories about the s**t he caught for doing that.

There was a story about a girl with the same background in a high school a while back who got in trouble for using that label in reference to herself too. I wish I could find that thread.

Trust me, they would run the ads....they wouldn't like the heat they would get from other places....if you don't know, we the people can shut down anything we choose to, if we do it together and something like this, the people would be behind you to do it...

There are plenty of examples disputing your contention but I like an optimist.

We, the People, have been so successfully divided into We, the Peoples, that we cannot even unite behind a war critical to our national security.

Since the rape charges have been dropped, there is no longer a (legal) need to keep the accusers name confidential.

If the MSM (msm should probably be in lower case) always manages to include the full names, and their pictures, of the (former) alleged rapists why don't they now identify and print the dancers name and picture for all the world to see and know?

Will Jesse Jackson now retract the "full scholarship" for the 'unknown name' dancer since she, herself, has exonerated the (former) alleged rapists?

I am a very conservative republican....anything less is treasonous in my book....either you take a stand and be firm, or get out of the way to let us thru....

There is no gray area in my life, there never has been, its either black or white.... I have taken out full page ads before, so I know how they work and they do work.....

There was nothing preventing the MSM from printing the whores name to begin with. The rape shield law only applies to the courtroom in the US.

"I think this is a sad situation for 3 young men, all thanks to a dancer and a DA... "

... and the young men's poor judgement. They carry a portion of the responsibility. Yes, what the accusers are doing is despicable, but if the men never hired a stripper in the first place, they would not be in this predicament today. I hope they learned a lesson.

Well, two of the accused are sophmores. When the team throws a party, the whole team goes to the party. Seligmann didn't even want to go, but did so in order not to appear rude. He and Finnerty saw the stripper for about five minutes only, in her 'dance', and then left.

For that, they have been subjected to unholy hell.

If we apply that same standard to everyone who sees a stripper, what do we say about the poor guy who was shot in New York the night before his wedding? Are we saying that he showed poor judgment, he made poor choices, and should not have been at a strip club, and so therefore contributed to what happened to him?

"I have taken out full page ads before, so I know how they work and they do work....."

A lot of people would like to take out full page ads in the Durham newspapers, in order to get the truth out. (Newspaper coverage there by at least one of the papers reads like a cheering section for Nifong).

But the cost of those is prohibitive, even though everyone thinks it's a good idea.

And if we did band together and get enough for the ad, then the people in Durham would just say that it must have been rich white people connected with Duke who put up the money for it.

And that could lead to (if possible) even more resentment.

I had a good friend (caucasian) who was from South Africa, a permanent US citizen. When filling out questionnaires or employment forms, he would inevitably fill in "African-American".

I had a friend of Egyptian descent who I kept telling to check "african american". She had at a hell of a lot more right to the title than American blacks who have not been in Africa for 10 generations

I too do not like the "historically black" label that many colleges get.

But, to NCCUs credit, white people get minority treatment (scholarships and the such) that is often reserved for "minorities" at other colleges.

First let's get charges filed against Nifong. We can worry about the truth-challenged exotic dancer later. A truth-challenged D.A. is a much more urgent problem.

There have been two crimes committed. The young lady who accused these men lied to cover her butt because she was caught drunk in public behind the wheel of a car. The DA charged three men with rape without ever reviewing the evidence to see if it indicated their guilt.
They both should be charged and be punished to the full extent of the law.
I hope these young men end up owning that county!!!!

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it works....sure there is resentment, especially when you have what you have here....3 white rich kids and poor, poor (sarcm) black woman....sorry but I just don't have any pity for a person like her, whether she is white or black that would pull something like this to ruin 3 young lives....and that is where the resentment lays....and that is the point that needs to be brought out, and the fact that this gold digging DA you have there has about as much of common sense of a piss ant....and thats just the way the ad should read....

When you take on 'city hall' don't expect to come home clean, you'll have dirt from one end to the other, but at least they know you aren't afraid to say what you will in public....and that is the point that will hurt them....they don't dare take you on for fear you'll run another ad....

Who are some examples of these all-knowing folks?
