Bipartisan Effort to Draft Immigration Bill
NY Times ^ | 12/26/2006 | By RACHEL L. SWARNS

WASHINGTON, Dec. 25 — Counting on the support of the new Democratic majority in Congress, Democratic lawmakers and their Republican allies are working on measures that could place millions of illegal immigrants on a more direct path to citizenship than would a bill that the Senate passed in the spring.

The lawmakers are considering abandoning a requirement in the Senate bill that would compel several million illegal immigrants to leave the United States before becoming eligible to apply for citizenship.

The lawmakers are also considering denying financing for 700 miles of fencing along the border with Mexico, a law championed by Republicans that passed with significant Democratic support.

Ted kennedy is actually saying the election sent a message we want this. Peter King is livid and saying Kennedy is totally misconstruing the election and immigration was the one strong thing the GOP had in September.

Ted Kennedy has never done one day of hard work in his life, he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, raised as the spoiled rotten youngest child which made him think it was okay to drive off a bridge and kill a woman and wait a day to report it.

Ted Kennedy is so far removed from the average American Citizen it's not even a horserace and is what is wrong in DC... people who are out of touch because they have never lived a day-to-day struggle like most American Citizens.

Hillary Clinton couldn't even pass the Bar Exam in DC, had to go to Arkansas, where it was easier, to pass. How many cases did she ever try for Rose Law Firm?

"These corrupt dogs are going to totally ignore law passed by large majoriy of our elected officials."

Nothing new here, not really. When the federal government decided to ignore immigration law enforcement years ago, that was the clearest indication yet that what passes for a "government" in Washington is nothing more than a scandalous gang of corrupt power whores. Forget about the Rule of Law. The only part that might still apply is anything that can be used against honest American citizens.

The federal government is well aware of just how much contempt we have for the political class of elites. They are quite nervous about it.

Good. They should be.

Thanks a lot. I hope we never have to leave the country we love, but things seem to be getting worse and worse, and I'd like a back up plan.

If you lived in my small city you would be anxious to get out.
The sad part is, the rest of the country will look no better eventually.
Might as well just plan on leaving.

I'm not ready to give up yet, but I do have a backup plan.

Costa Rica mostly, some of the pacific Islands are also popular.
I've known some to go to strange places, Brazil, Argentina, etc.
I think it partly depends on just how much money you have to brib...er, buy the good life with.

"I am doing a happy dance. I would rather have no bill then the crappy Senate bill!

My fear was that the true conservatives in the House would cave, but they did not.

I don't live in Sensenbrenner's district, but I see him every once in a while at different political events. I am going to give him a huge bear hug the next time I see him!"

Make up your mind.

And your favored "moderate" Dems will be in power. Now we'll be one big happy economic bloc. Have you dropped your nativist opposition to fast track citizenship for illegals and guest workers yet?

Ted Kennedy probably can't remember what he says on a day to day basis.

But, the politicians will use whatever they want to justify their actions. Besides the people who actually pay attention to world events (like those who post on FR) I doubt immigration was the driving force at the ballot box. Everyone knows it was really Iraq.

"fast track"?

According to my count and various statements made in this and other articles, there are still not enough votes for cloture on McCain-Kennedy. This means that there will have to be another compromise like Hagel-Martinez.

The various dates and numbers, of the compromise, will likely change. For example, the Jan 7, 04 cut off date will change because it is now 3 years old and was selected only because of complaints that Bush's Feb, 04 speech caused a spike in illegal traffic.

It is possible that they will be viewed as visionaries, but not probable.

It is more probable that, in 08, the dems will expand their majority in Congress and elect a President.

For sure, Tancredo and his cronies will continue to attack immigrants(Cuban third worlders), driving the wedge deeper. No doubt the dems will try to manuever the GOP into a strident anti-immigrant position.

"He's rope a doping his way to the finish line the best he can and you are still blaming him for making you vote democrat."

It might come as a surprize to you, but I voted Republican.
That doesen't change the fact that Bush wants amnesty for
20 million new democrat voting illegals.

"One more time. Republicans patriotic American party who support the troops and the mission and who support capitalism and lower taxes.

Democrats, pacifists, communists, socialists, anti American, high tax anti God, pro abortion party. Are you kidding me? Ask yourself who hates Bush and the republicans. If you answer pacifist, baby killing, taxaholics, then realize that's who you just climbed in bed with. Give me Ronald Regan anytime."

Two words, Arlen Specter and Zell Miller shoot your theory all to hell and back. It's like the people who say Black = Thug, White = Angel. The word you are looking for is "Some", in the future try not to paint all people with the same brush.

Thats funny about Hillary, the"world's most brilliant woman".
I would presume that the Arkansas Bar Exam is a tad less rigorous than the DC one.
Regarding Kennedy, someone earlier chastised me for using"class warfare"tactics in condeming the never worked a real job in their life folks, implying I was somehow using Marxist rhetoric.
Quite to the contrary, its just the opposite. These liberal plutocrats are a lot like the Communist elite who dictated to "the working class"what was in their best interests.
Growing up,I was taught that WORKING an honest job was one of the core conservative values.I still think so today.Nothing more shameful to me than someone sitting on their butt telling others how to live their lives and collecting a fat check to do so.

I saw the comments chastising you and felt the comments were ill-placed (not sure that's a good word)... I understood exactly what you were saying and what's more I agree with you. More, I think we need to get beyond all this political correctness and start calling a spade a spade.

'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

My rant was strictly about the lack of republican support in the 06 election which directly resulted in the defeat of America to the socialist agenda. It now gets worse. The weakest part of the Bush presidency is his immigration stance (as well as the rest of his big giverment approach to problems). By electing democrats in 06 we played into his weakness by allowing him to act on it.

This bothers me greatly about republican/conservative schism. Many big money republicans (global free traders) are invested in this North American Union thing. I think Bush thinks he sees a bigger picture on the immigration thing, i.e. how it fits into this new north American alliance. One big continent, free trade free access, no boarders, new currency (ameros). This, as Rush said, will be the undoing of the republican party. Conservatives and globalists can't live in one tent. There's trouble in river city.
