Middle America's soul:If you want to understand (USA), turn that dial to a country-music station

I don't think America's soul repeats itself every two hours.

Football and country music.
Whisky, BBQ and Free Republic.

Works for me. (And it's better than anything French.)

No modern American politician would dare be so sniffy about country music.

On the other hand, it's a whole lot better than it used to be. I can just about remember it in the 1950s and the chorus of every song seemed to be:

Oh Lord,
I'm so sorry
For myself.

The funny thing is that, kid that I was, I liked it. Which is now a little embarrassing.

Good article that is very true. I do have to make one minor correction:
"So you can let yourself go on Saturday night without much risk that you'll wind up in hospital and unable to drive the kids to school on Monday morning. Country folk are sensible, mostly."

That should read "and unable to drive your kids to church on Sunday Morning".

Excellent article. I was never into country music but since moving back from Los Angeles I've become addicted to it. Yet, it's not the true, pure country music as in the past. That I didn't care for so much. I'll take Gretchen Wilson over Britney Spears, and, JoeDon Rooney (yum) over any of the male singers any day!

Homos like Keith Urban and Kenny Chesney, and liberals like Faith and Tim don't tell me about middle America's soul.

Ok, I have to post this old country music joke:

What do you get when you play country music backwards?

You get your wife back, your dog back and your truck back. :)

"Smoke in the Water" (WWII version)
"There'll be nothing left but vultures
to inhabit all that land,
When our modern ships and bombers
make a graveyard of Japan."

!!!!

Anyone know where I could find the complete lyrics and music? Searching for SotW only turns up references to the 1973 Rock song.

Joe Nichols

The kid from Rogers, Arkansas, who inherited his love of country at the feet of semi-professional pickers including his grandfather, uncles and truck driving father Mike, was facing personal tragedy. Six days before MAN WITH A MEMORY’s release, at what might have been a moment of immense familial pride, Joe’s dad succumbed to a long battle with a rare pulmonary illness at age 46. Rather than cancel an earlier scheduled performance on the Grand Ole Opry, the day after the funeral the entire Nichols clan decided to drive to Nashville to watch Joe sing his father’s favorite Merle Haggard song, “Footlights,” as a tribute.
