SARASOTA, Fla. -- Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is considering not sitting the certified Republican winner of a contested congressional election when Congress reconvenes next month, her spokesman said.

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, said the congresswoman has not yet decided what to do about the contested District 13 race where Republican Vern Buchanan was certified the winner by the state by a margin of 369 votes over Democrat Christine Jennings.

"The bottom line here is that nothing's off the table," Hammill said.

Message to America from Nancy Pelosi: From now on, only elections won by democrats will count. So legal certified elections, the will of the people, mean nothing to the new democratic congress? Sounds like colonial America circa 1775 all over again.

If I were the person due to be seated , I would hit her with a law suit so fast her eyes would assume their normal size.

WTF does she think she is?

The State certified him the winner ... I don't see how she can legally do this

Maybe she's just throwing her weight around

This has happened before in the House.

It has something to do with the Speaker recognizing whomever.

I do not believe that this would be able to last.

Can she really do this?

I think Democrats have done it a few times before.

Article I, Section 5:

"Each House shall be the judge of the elections, returns and qualifications of its own members..."

Basically...Yeah. She can.

It depends, I guess.

What is the controlling authority?

Who is going to tell her to stop?

... And then impose an actual consequence if she doesn't?

I believe the section of the Constitution that would allow her to do this is:

Article I, Section 5. Each House shall be the judge of the elections, returns and qualifications of its own members, and a majority of each shall constitute a quorum to do business; but a smaller number may adjourn from day to day, and may be authorized to compel the attendance of absent members, in such manner, and under such penalties as each House may provide.

What was it like growing up with this woman as your mother, I wonder. Does she have any real friends, or just people who are afraid of her? I think there is something very wrong with this creature on a personal level.

I live in this district. I am so sick of the media giving this bitch Christine Jennings a pass. If the repub had lost, they would be screaming for him to concede. Yet we are hearing no calls from our local media for this from the rat.
My wife and I both called her campaign HQ and told them what we thought. They were rude and told us that they would fight for every vote to be counted blah, blah, blah.
If Pelosi does this, it will guarantee this district will never vote democrat in the forseeable future.

The Dems have done this before. In the 80s they appointed a group with one more Congressional Democrat than Republican on it to decide a race from (I think) Indiana. Leon Panetta was one of the Dems on the group. In the end, if I remember correctly, the Democrat won the race by one vote under objections by the Republicans on the investigating group.

I'm not saying it's fair. I'm not saying I like it. It's not and I don't. But it is what it is. Stuff like this is exactly why I didn't want those guys to win.

For those who sat on their hands this election in order to teach the Republicans a lesson, know this: the Democrats, having been out of power in the House for 12 years will stop at nothing to see that they never lose power again.

Democracy and Freedom as we know it are at risk and this is not hyperbole. This party will stop at nothing to maintain power, and if they ever regain control of the executive and both houses, we are doomed.

Thus will Franklin prove prophetic: "A Republic, if you can keep it."

Only if Republicans let her. And if past history is any indication, they will.
