Bill Clinton's former National Security Adviser, Sandy Berger, has already recanted his initial claim that he removed documents from the National Archives "inadvertently" back in 2003 while preparing for testimony to the 9/11 Commission. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in 2005 and paid a $50,000 fine. But now the report of the Archives' Inspector General has come to light, and it suggests Mr. Berger knew he was engaged in a bit of hugger-mugger when he secreted the after-action memos he was reviewing out of the building.
According to the report, obtained by the Associated Press through a Freedom of Information Act request, Mr. Berger removed the documents and hid some of them under a trailer in a construction site before returning to retrieve them later. This is not the behavior of a man with a clear conscience. And it's astonishing for a man who served in a senior White House position that made him familiar with the obligations of handling classified papers.
At the time of the plea, federal prosecutor Noel Hillman assured this newspaper that Mr. Berger was working off of copies of the memos printed from a hard drive, so there was no danger that handwritten notes in the margins of certain copies could have been destroyed. But one doesn't need to entertain conspiracy theories to be reminded through this tale of how the Clinton Administration had a penchant for abusing the public trust. The Berger story is of a piece with the Travel Office dust-up and the 900 confidential FBI files that the White House somehow managed to collect, some of them pertaining to prominent Republicans. That too was supposed to have been an accident.

I'm still waiting for an explanation from Alberto Gonzales' DOJ as to why Berger was allowed to steal and destroy classified documents and why he is still walking free on the streets.
If anyone else did that, they'd be incarcerated so deeply under the prison, they'd have to have their own air tank!!

what happened to the investigative report???

Can someone enlighten me on a few basic questions? When exactly did Berger recant and why/how did he do so? Why is this information about hiding the documents under the trailer only coming out now? We already knew that the documents were highly damaging to the Clintoon crowd and that Berger destroyed them.....so other than more specific details, what new information is known now that wasn't known a year ago?
