Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Disturbing statistics on the number of Hispanics who daily go hungry in America was released at a press conference on Wednesday by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). The national Hispanic civil rights group found that nearly one in five people lack nutritious food.

NCLR officials said in a press release that increasing federal nutrition assistance programs would help decrease the growing "food insecurity" faced by 19.6 percent of Latinos in America.

"Lack of access to resources is forcing far too many Latino families into choices no one should have to make, such as between having a roof over their heads or putting food on the table. A lack of affordable, nutritious food also has devastating health consequences, such as increasing hunger and obesity, affecting not only the Latino community but the well-being of our entire nation," Janet Murgua, NCLR President and CEO, said in the statement.

Hispanics are the largest minority in America.

BBC news reported on Thursday that one of the study's authors, Jennifer Ng'andu, said that when it came to issues of hunger and malnutrition in the U.S. that the Latino community was "practically invisible."

According to the study, although lack of food is more of a problem for Hispanics than for whites in America, it is still African Americans who are most likely to go hungry every day.

The study found that the number of Hispanics going hungry was three percent higher than for non-Hispanic whites and eight percent lower than for non-Hispanic blacks, BBC reported.

Yeah. along with pro Castro or pro communist anything. - There seems to be no lack of anti American sentiment in America, in no small part abetted by the NEA and the mass Media.

That's a great sign, and the owner of that business has every right to enforce the policy.

By the same token, owners of other businesses can encourage other languages being spoken at will in their stores.

Ain't America great?

Do you really think that they don't understand?

I think they just choose the easy way out on situations.

They run to our country because we will take care of them.

Even with care, they still choose to eat poorly even though there are healthier alternatives.

You can't educate someone that doesn't want to be educated.

NO ONE lacks sufficient food in America.

If they do, it's by choice, or because they are lazy, braindead, muddle-headed, disoriented, wack-a-doodle, or have a variety of other ailments.

There are a dozen food pantry organizations in my county alone (in Pennsylvania) where one can get free food 24/7, and that's not counting the 300 or so churches which would gladly help anyone, no questions asked.

Although I didn't read the article posted, I assume it is trying to make a point, although I'm not sure what.

In the practice I work at....only about 75% of the patients are shocked when we tell them about nutritional values in foods. Many people think they are 'doing right' by eating certain foods and going by popular diets like 'low fat' or 'low carb' or ingesting Nutrasweet and Splenda.... meanwhile, after some metabolic and endocrine diagnostic tests are run....these people are lacking the basic vitamins and minerals to make to body run efficiently.

I am fully aware of the educational process. I do it every single day. After we give the information to the patients ...its up to them what they do with it. And...as I mentioned before...bad CHOICES are what ends up burdening the rest of society.
