Barack Hussein Obama: Once a Muslim, Always A Muslim

By Debbie Schlussel

Many months ago, readers began asking me whether Barack Obama is Muslim. Since he identifies as a Christian, I said, "no," and responded that he was not raised by his Kenyan father.

But, then, I decided to look further into Obama's background. His full name--as by now you have probably heard--is Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. Hussein is a Muslim name, which comes from the name of Ali's son--Hussein Ibn Ali. And Obama is named after his late Kenyan father, the late Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., apparently a Muslim.

And while Obama may not identify as a Muslim, that's not how the Arab and Muslim Streets see it. In Arab culture and under Islamic law, if your father is a Muslim, so are you. And once a Muslim, always a Muslim. You cannot go back. In Islamic eyes, Obama is certainly a Muslim. He may think he's a Christian, but they do not.

Then, there are the other items in his background. As best-selling author Scott Turow wrote in Salon, Obama went to a Muslim school for two years in Indonesia. His mother, Anna, married an Indonesian man (likely another Muslim, as Indonesia is Muslim-dominated and has the largest Islamic population in the world).

And Obama has a "born-again" affinity for the nation of his Muslim father, Kenya, and his Kenyan sister. (Although Kenya is largely Christian, it has a fast-growing Muslim population that has engaged in a good deal of religious violence and riots against Christians. And Kenyan courts will apply Sharia law, when the participants are Muslim.) Wrote Turow:

Obama's father died in a traffic accident in Nairobi in 1982, but while Obama was working in Chicago, he met his Kenyan sister, Auma, a linguist educated in Germany who was visiting the United States. When she returned to Kenya in 1986 to teach for a year at the University of Nairobi, Obama finally made the trip to his father's homeland he had long promised himself. There, he managed to fully embrace a heritage and a family he'd never fully known and come to terms with his father, whom he'd long regarded as an august foreign prince, but now realized was a human being burdened by his own illusions and vulnerabilities.

So, even if he identifies strongly as a Christian, and even if he despised the behavior of his father (as Obama said on Oprah); is a man who Muslims think is a Muslim, who feels some sort of psychological need to prove himself to his absent Muslim father, and who is now moving in the direction of his father's heritage, a man we want as President when we are fighting the war of our lives against Islam? Where will his loyalties be?

Is that even the man we'd want to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, if Hillary Clinton offers him the Vice Presidential candidacy on her ticket (which he certainly wouldn't turn down)?

NO WAY, JOSE . . . Or, is that, HUSSEIN?

This is absolutely pathetic - Schlussel is capable of so much better. Christianity has as one of it's main tenets to go out and spread the word. To convert people. So if Christians believe that people can truly convert, isn't this idea that "once a Muslim, always a Muslim" nonsensical? She brings in this extraneous idea that he may not be considered a Christian by some outside Muslims? So? He considers himself a Christian. He has publicly embraced Christianity over Islam. Isn't the measure of a Christian what he believes in his heart, not what other people think of him?

I'd advise anyone taking this tack against Obama to be careful. If a man who publicly renounced Islam to become a Christian isn't accepted as a Christian by other Christians, why would anyone else ever convert?

Here's an idea. How about attacking Obama for his liberal political views? How about attacking him for taking campaign contributions from a criminal? It's makes the Right Wing look ineffectual if the best we can do is attack him for converting to Christianity and for his middle name which millions of people happen to share.

You would not be alone in advising against this approach...

Why the f*** should I care how "the Arab and Muslim Streets see it"?

"Obama's father died in a traffic accident in Nairobi in 1982"

...a traffic accident? In Nairobi?! I'm sorry, I'm sure he was a one heluva guy, probably part of the "peaceful" Islamics, but that sounds like a Wierd Al Yancovic song.

this sounds so much liek s smear with suppositions and unfounded suspicion that I am embarrassed that she is on our side.

if we can't find anything really wrong with the guy, then we ought not to stoop to such lows.

Has Obama ever denounced Islam?
If not, I see no reason to believe him.

What Church does Mr Hussein Obama belong to?

The Obamas are members of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. He wrote:

I was drawn to the power of the African American religious tradition to spur social change. [...] In the history of these struggles, I was able to see faith as more than just a comfort to the weary or a hedge against death; rather, it was an active, palpable agent in the world. [...] It was because of these newfound understandings–that religious commitment did not require me to suspend critical thinking, disengage from the battle for economic and social justice, or otherwise retreat from the world that I knew and loved–that I was finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity United Church of Christ one day and be baptized. It came about as a choice and not an epiphany; the questions I had did not magically disappear. But kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side of Chicago, I felt God's spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth.

The big question is weather other muslims will see him as a muslim that has comitted the unpardonable sin of converting to christianity.

That would earn him a death sentence in most of the muslim world!

The man self-identifies as a Christian. I would leave it as that.

His politics are wrong, and because his politics are wrong, we don't want him in office. The religion of a father that didn't raise him is irrelevant. The fact that he's a socialist who favors even the craziest tenets of Dem orthodoxy, despite his religious values, that does matter.

Obamo Osamo ain't no Christian despite what he says. No real Christian would support abortion. That's a fact.

OK, Ok, Ok, all you have to do is look at his middle name...it is "HUSSEIN"......he is a Muslim, he is not for America...IMHO. Currently he is the darling of the Left....they will eat each other up between him an Hildabeast....I imagine it will be a Hillary/Obama ticket....then watch out America.....
