Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, who also served as secretary of Health and Human Services under President George W. Bush, has filed presidential exploratory papers with the Federal Election Committee, according to an aide to Thompson.
Thompson, whose welfare-to-work legislation in Wisconsin served as a model for national welfare reform, has also recruited Steve Grubbs, an Iowa political strategist, to help with his budding presidential campaign, the aide said.

Hah! If he wants to go back to Washington DC, he should have ran for the US Senate.
To: TommyDale
I wish Fred Thompson would run for the GOP nomination.

I could back Fred quite easily. He's certainly conservative enough, and he has recognition.

You didn't do the party any favors when you refused to take on Kohl, so I think the party should return the favor. Tommy, you might as well tilt your lance at windmills.

He could make a good showing in Iowa, which is why I think he's considering a run. That said, he'd get crushed in every other early primary. If he wanted to be in DC, a Senate run would be the perfect option - he polls better than either of the two Wisconsin Democrats.

Any dirty laundry? IMHO, he'll be able to connect to primary voters more than McCain, Giuliani or Romney.

We're a 50/50 state. That doesn't mean the Republicans are RINOs. (See Jim Sensenbrenner, Paul Ryan, and Joe McCarthy for some examples to start.)

I may be terribly superficial in my estimation of Gov. Tommy Thompson as a Presidential candidate, but the needle on my "wow meter" doesn't even budge when I put in his name.
He strikes me as a candidate in the same league with Bob Dole for lack of charisma, and we all know how that turned out against a Clinton in 1996. I remain open to be convinced otherwise.
To: bert
Better Fred Thompson than John McCain or Rudy Giuliani, the two most divisive candidates in the GOP.
