The White House says it is inappropriate for members of Congress to meet privately with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. VOA White House correspondent Scott Stearns reports, one senator visited Damascus earlier this week, and several others are planning visits to the Syrian capital.
White House spokesman Tony Snow criticized Florida Senator Bill Nelson for meeting with President Assad Wednesday, saying it is neither helpful nor appropriate.
"The point is that, even lending a further specter of legitimacy to that government undermines the cause of democracy in the region," said Mr. Snow. "The Syrians have been adventurous and meddlesome in Iraq, and in Lebanon, and working against the causes of democracy in both of those countries."

They always claim they're doing some "innocent" fact-finding thing, but it is so clear that they are trying to give these foreign governments the idea that they, and not Bush, are the ones in power and the ones who are capable of negotiating. Personally, I think travel by private individuals to these countries should be forbidden.
The left is very good at this tactic of simply ignoring the actual government in power. That was what AMLO tried to do in Mexico, but I think the Mexican left had first been encouraged by what they saw the Dems getting away with here (however, the Mexican left pushed it a little too far and got slapped down). After the 2004 election, IIRC, Kerry swanned around the world acting as if he was the one who had been elected - and sadly enough, he was received by many governments in Europe as if this had been the case. I'm sure Assad is just loving it.
Looking at this from across the country, IMO Katherine Harris might have stood a chance if she had received support from the Bush family.

The President could exercise some executive authority and cancel Nelson's passport. Keep him out of the country until after the Senate meets to establish chairmanship of each committee next year. Kerry would come running home without visiting Assad.

This is remarkable hubris. These legislators are now usurping the executive role in Syria and Cuba. It is as though the Demoncrats have brushed Bush aside and are trying to make their own foreign policy. Such confusion is bound not to end well.

They were elected or re elected. That was their goal. They said what they thought the people would believe.
If any of the fools that voted for them, voted for them because they campaiganed on being for lower taxes, for private ownership of firearms,or for National security they deserve what they get.

Given that Bill Nelson, Kerry, Specter et al are filthy pondscum, the fact remains that the administration continues to make it easy for these usurpers to trample on the nation's aims. No. The point is, Tony you pansy, that "these senators are hindering and interfering with the foreign policies of this nation. They are doing harm to America's war effort." What's so hard about telling the truth at long last, admitting that the "loyal opposition" has evaporated and we are left with an opposiiton that is not loyal, nor even particularly American?
This "government" is out of control and it is because of a failure of leadership by the executive. No more and no less. I know the elections have emboldened the dirtbag contingent, and mental defectives like those mentioned above are feeling grandiose, but the power still resides in the executive. Bush needs to use it or this whole fricking effort will fall apart.
This is plain sabotage we are witnessing, and all the executive can do is murmur about "the cause of democracy in the region." America's domestic future is more at stake right now than democracy in the mideast, and I don't think the executive even sees it coming.
