A top 10 list that may make you think that 1007, rather than 2007, is just around the corner.
1. Some Real Inconvenient Truth. Gore whipped the world into a global warming frenzy. I personally asked Mr. Gore to help arrange a debate. He declined (twice).
2. Board of Health or Bored of Science? NYCs Board of Health banned restaurants from serving foods cooked with vegetable oils containing transfats. It mattered little to the Board that the FDA classifies trans fats as generally recognized as safe.
3. What Hurricane Season? The NOAA predicted a 5% chance of a below-normal hurricane season. Wrong.
4. Day of Reckoning for DDT Foes? It took 30 years, tens of millions of lives lost, and billions sickened, but the WHO finally ended its ban on DDT.
5. Cosmic ray study fails to penetrate lead-lined media. Researchers provided evidence that just 5 years of cosmic ray activity can have 85 percent of the effect on the Earths climate as 200 years of manmade carbon dioxide emissions.
6. Stem cell fraud and futility.
7. Low-fat diet myth busted. The widely-held 30-year old notion that low-fat diets are good for your health went poof this year.
8. Woodpecker Racket. A reported sighting by an anti-development group of the thought-to-be-extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker [was debunked]. Environmental groups used the sighting to convince a judge to stop a $320,000,000 Army Corps of Engineers irrigation project.
9. Food police indict SpongeBob Squarepants. Several anti-fun food activist groups sued Nickelodeon and Kellogg for using cartoon characters to advertise food products
10. Californias Not-so-deadly Air. Bill Clinton and Julia Roberts stumped for Californias Proposition 87 and claimed that Californias air is the worst in the nation . But data indicate that Californias public health is better than states which meet federal air quality standards.

The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology is an "anti-development group"? This guy comes across as kind of an idiot.
Yes, kind of an idiot. His commentary about global warming is welcome, but his defense of trans fats is ludicrous. GRAS is no harbinger of healthfulness. Hydrogenated fats are slow poison, and such has been known for decades. Their sole benefit is an economic one to their producers and junk-food manufacturers.
Trans-fats are delicious. MYOB.
I've read up on the Ivory-billed Woodpecker issue. The people involved are reputable and are also convinced that they saw one. They may be wrong, but they are not misrepresenting what they believe happened.
IS the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology anti-developement? Not knowing anything about it, I can't say it's not, since the name is no indication, one way or the other. Is it possible that they are a bunch of liberals, who saw a way to stop an irrigation project that they felt might mar mother earth's image? Or was the whole pecker-wood sighting legitimate? Just asking, since you seem to have some expertise.
Ditto. If I eat way too much of the stuff cooked in oils without trans-fats I still will get fat.
"...on the Ivory-billed Woodpecker issue. The people involved are reputable and are also convinced that they saw one."
Well, ok. But are the environmental groups who lobbied to stop the irrigation project also just as pure? Pardon me if I seem a bit suspicious...but it does seem like a pretty small bit of proof to stop a huge developement.
"...without trans-fats I still will get fat."
Hmm. Maybe it'll be a healthy kind of fat?
And so what? What is your point? Are you saying that junk food manufacturers should also be banned?
Where is it written in the Constitution that the Nanny State has the right to ban a legal product? Educate the public by all means, but I, for one, am very wary of the food police or anyone who would decide what I can and can not eat. If they aren't paying for my housing, food bill and health care, which they are not, then it is none of their damned business what I choose to put in my mouth.
And besides, if trans fats were wiped out, where would I get my once a year Twinkie fix?
(s) perhaps we need a status tax... too fat you are taxed for public overweightness.(/s)
When weather scientists join the global warming choir and orchestra it's called politics.
"When weather scientists join the global warming choir and orchestra it's called politics."
Actually global warming is not really in question, it's easily documented. The question is what is causing it and how far will it go. IOW, it was just a bad prediction unless they specifically chalked it up to something.

Huh? Can anyone get me more information on this?
You seem to have forgot the pocket book and convenience of consumers, who don't like potato chips and such to go rancid within days.
I think the reporter is referring to the Big Woods Conservation Partnership, which is an anti-development group and which Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology is a member.
