Pittsburgh Steelers' linebacker Joey Porter was fined $10,000 by the NFL on Thursday for a gay slur he made towards Cleveland Browns' tight end Kellen Winslow after the game on Thursday.
During the game, Winslow was flagged for a personal foul for hitting Steelers linebacker James Farrior after a play. In a post-game interview, Porter referred to Winslow with a derogatory word used to describe homosexuals.
On Tuesday, Porter apologized, saying he didn't intend to offend anyone but Winslow.
"I guess, how we used that word freely, me using it growing up, I didn't think anything of it," Porter said on Tuesday. "I apologize to anyone I offended. I didn't mean to offend nobody but Kellen Winslow."
This was Porter's second fine of the season. During a game against the Atlanta Falcons in October, Porter was fined $15,000 for comments he made to an official.
There is no word on whether Porter will appeal the fine.

I wouldn't doubt it.
Maybe they should quit keeping score.......... "feelings" may be hurt.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but the fine was appropriate because of Porter's terrible representation of the league during a press conference. If he went off howling at the moon in the presser for some desired effect, he should also be fined. Players, when in front of the klieg lights, need to keep their egos in check and behave in a civil manner.
But, then again, I guess I expect NFL players to behave at least as well as my seven year old daughter.

Big BROTHER is here! What happened to free speech? Well, the NFL is a business and not the government, so if they want to set standards for how their member employees behave, then fine (no pun intended). Big Brother would be the government saying they can't do that.
OTOH, the NFL receives perqs from the public. Preferential treatment (what other business owners get their facilities built with taxpayer funds?) means, IMHO, that the NFL is under different rules.

Well done. A succinct word association that deflated all the hot air in the story. And very funny.
Especially appreciated as this is the type of humor I heard all my life from my Pa. You made my day. Thanks.

Porter is a loudmouth, but I could care less if he called Winslow a "fag". Now, if Joey had made fun of Winslow's ears, he'd be in BIG trouble!
