U.S. willing to give Pyongyang [North Korea] written security guarantee: sources

Excerpt -

SEOUL, Dec. 14 (Yonhap) -- In a major incentive for North Korea, the United States is willing to provide the communist regime with a written security guarantee if it agrees to take concrete actions to end its nuclear weapons program at next week's six-way talks, diplomatic sources here said Thursday.

The U.S. offered the olive branch at a meeting between its chief nuclear envoy Christopher Hill and his North Korean counterpart Kim Kye-gwan in Beijing late last month, according to the sources.

The offer came as the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Russia, and Japan are set to restart the long-stalled negotiations in Beijing on Monday.

"Such written security guarantees are seen as a prelude to the normalization of diplomatic ties between North Korea and the U.S.," a source said.

They're joking, right? We should blow that pot-bellied dog-eating Stalinist madman to kingdom come.

If true, this means only that we are going to compromise with absolute, unmitigated evil.

The result will be to legitimize the Communist tyranny of Kim Jong Il, and the North Korean people will continue to suffer the worst sort of deprivations and torture.

That's one helluva legacy, ya know?

The Gipper would not only have said 'no' but '*HELL NO!*'

... U.S. President George W. Bush reportedly said he can meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il to sign a formal peace treaty to replace the cease-fire that ended the three-year Korean War in 1953, if the North agrees to give up its nuclear ambitions.

I don't think that this is likely a correct story. Making a peace treaty with this disgusting dictator, who has done nothing but break every agreement that he has signed, would not be a shining achievement for us. He would not give up his nuclear program, no matter what paper he signed with us, and surely our State Department must realize that.

So long as any written guarantee is kept in the proper perspective, I'm ok with this.
